Default 4516-2 Price

I have an opportunity to buy a 4516-2, stainless slide and frame, with 3 Galco belt holsters and a shoulder rig, and 3 magazines. Does anyone know what a good price for this would be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Four (total) holsters really confuses the "good price" thing... unless you've got a need or desire for four holsters for it. Those holsters are not cheap! On the other hand, I've never paid a dime more for any 3rd Gen because it came with one or more used holsters. I collect/accumulate guns, not used holsters.

I'd have to say somewhere in pmosley's range probably makes sense. That assumes the gun is in good, clean, serviceable condition with no major cosmetic flaws. I'd personally offer no more than $500 but that's just me. Going over my $500 "No wife approval required" spending limit just because of all those holsters would never pass muster in this household.

I have much the same spending issue. The gun looks clean, I've had it apart and can't find anything wrong with it. The magazine disconnect still works, the safety de cocker still works the magazines are all clean and functioning. My biggest, problem, I guess, is that I'm not all that educated on older smiths. I love the weight of it, and it feels great in the hand, and will make a great carry gun, I think.

The guy is throwing the holsters in because he no longer has a need for them, and after doing some checking, no one really seems to make anything for it these days. I tried Bianchi and Galco, and Galco had 2 offerings, neither of which were really appealing to me. I'm going to check the Alien Gear website, and then maybe Milt Sparks, see what they can do.

Thanks again, guys, I appreciate the advice and knowledge. If there is any other info, like can I put a spurred hammer on it, or foes the recoil spring need changed out, I would appreciate it.

$400 for a nice clean gun. A little more with box & papers. Accessories are worth zero to me unless I actually want them. The seller can usually get more for them by selling them separately to someone who actually needs them. GARY

Lord knows that I am no expert on holsters. Quite the opposite, in fact! But it sounds like you actually need these holsters (or at least some of them) so that makes the deal more attractive in my book.

And what you don't want, you can sell right here on the forum. If 4516 holsters are as rare as you suggest, they might bring a good return if in decent condition.

Welcome to the Forum!

I vote $450-$550 depending on condition. You can install a spur hammer on it but it will have to match the trigger. The earlier were forged and the later had MIM. (my 4516-2 serial # VCKxxxx has forged parts.)

4516's are great "little" guns for carry (abet somewhat heavy compared to other guns.) or shooting.

If you don't like the holsters that come with it most leather holsters for SIG P220's and P229's fit quite nicely.

MTR Custom leather makes holsters for most 3rd gens still.

Accessories don't mean much to me unless I'll use them but I look at the whole package and price. I usually sell the extras to offset the primary cost. I have done very well on some deals.

TTSH, thanks for the idea!! I honestly only need one belt holster, and the shoulder holster is a jackass rig, so just may keep that for dress up nights.

Shorty 45 MK2, thanks for the welcome! I appreciate it. I'm still pretty new to all this forum stuff, but I'm learning. Now, for another dumb question. How do I tell if the parts are forged or MIM? And, what all is involved in changing the hammer? And thanks for the holster info, that's good stuff.

Gun hobbit and 03Fatboy, I also have a collection of holsters, most of which I haven't used in probably a decade. To be honest, I have 2 that I use for my 1911, an IWB and a Kydex belt holster. And selling the extras seems like a good idea, too.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate all the knowledge

jbcontreras0301, I'm not 100% sure but the MIM triggers on S&W revolvers have a relief on the back and the forged ones do not. The forged hammers will have lines across the back from the forging process.

Thought I had a photo of them but can't seem to find it. I'll try and take some tomorrow.

As for the difficulty in swapping I can't say, member BMCM would be the man for that. If it's MIM it should be drop in but I've been wrong before.

This is what BMCM will send you, if you ask nicely. I've swapped a LOT of hammers now after he shared this:

S&W 3rd gen complete disassembly video

Like all other things, it helps to have the right tools. But they're not that specialized. Hardest part was, when needed, swapping over the hammer strut.

Two quick observations -

First, there were NO 4516's for sale on GB a bit ago - unusual, as there are typically 3-5 at any given time.

Second, our own Fastbolt, prefers the consistency of MIM parts in the 3rd generation pistols. I'd seriously consider whether it's worth it to change out parts for the sake of eliminating MIM components.

Otherwise, good luck on the acquisition.

I wouldn't, but when someone wants to cock back on the hammer of a gun that that has the hammer you can't cock, & when you look for a replacement, it'd be nice to find the same type [milled, or mim] that the gun came with. I'd like to find a hammer I can cock for my 3913, & the original was not mim. GARY

Ok, definitely some food for thought. Thanks for all the great info! I looked on GB to get and idea of price, but they only had mags and parts for sale. And thanks for the video link, that's good stuff!

Hi jbcontreras0301, Welcome aboard

Lets see if I can address some of your questions....

I think the price has been pretty well covered already. My opinion is anywhere between $4-500 is good. Checking Gunbroker is a good option to give you an idea of what they're selling for too but... You have to use the "advanced search" button then select the "completed items" tab in order view the sold items and their prices. I believe you must have a GB member account to use this feature.

Springs?
On any newly acquired pistol with unknown round count it is always best practice to replace the recoil spring. Don't forget the magazine springs either, they get tired too and can cause or contribute to function issues.

Here at the homestead, new (to me) guns get detail stripped down the the very last pin. Every part is cleaned & inspected and anything out of order either gets fixed or replaced before I re-assemble and go for a test drive.

MIM parts?

Here in this thread I posted a brief pictorial ID'ing various MIM components that might be helpful.
Question about MIM parts on gen3 5906/5903's...

MIM vs Forged or Wrought steel?
A little fiddling with the search engine will yield a nauseatingly huge volume of info on this contentious topic.

Here's what I think, later in that same thread I posted this:
Question about MIM parts on gen3 5906/5903's...

Be sure to pay close attention to fastbolt's comments in that thread too.

Install a spurred hammer?

Easily done. Any 3rd gen spurred TDA hammer will work. However , since the steel parts are long out of production, you are much more likely to find a new MIM spurred hammer. In most cases and easy swap with change of the hammer stirrup.
When swapping the hammer, the trigger doesn't really matter as it only interacts with the drawbar. What you want to match and be of like material is the hammer & sear. One of the old timer Master Gunsmiths at S&W told me a couple years back that the surface hardness is a typically bit greater on the MIM parts so pairing a MIM hammer with a steel sear likely leads to accelerated wear of the sear. I follow that guys advice in my tinkering.

Personally I don't care for the spurred hammers on TDA guns, especially so for CCW's. I prefer my carry guns as snag free as possible. In any event I recommend trying out a 45xx or anything for that matter, with a spurred hammer first. I have pretty big paws and even with the longer grip tang (beavertail) on the fullsize duty models I get hammer bite. Every one of my guns have spurrless hammers installed as a result.

Cheers
Bill

In my case, the seller placed an ad for his 645 asking $500. I politely told him my offer was $400, & wouldn't go any higher, but that since he just placed the ad to wait & see if anyone would give him what he was asking for. A week later he e-mailed me accepting my offer since it was the highest he had received. GARY

BMCM,

Thanks for the info and links. I'm taking it for a quick test drive this weekend, seeing how I like it. I was thinking of changing out the hammer, but I'm not convinced it's necessary just yet, especially with the MIM/forged parts thing. Definitely changing out the springs if I buy it, which I'm planning on doing if I like how it shoots. Yeah I can see where a master gunsmiths advice would be hard to ignore. You make a lot of good points, and I'm questioning the necessity of some things, especially if it's just an aesthetic change (I carry and shoot a 1911 regularly). And before I forget, thanks for the welcome. Lastly, does anyone know much about the 1076? I've been contemplating one for years, but have only ever seen one in a store.

And to you lucky guys finding these good deals, I wish I lived where you guys do!!

Jason

Hi BMCM,

I thought I'd joined the S&W Forum years ago but just like everything else when you get older.....! So I just joined and discovered your information regarding the 3rd Generation Semi-autos. I want to thank you for the exceptional videos & info you uploaded for the these S&W pistols! During the 80s & 90s, I was a young NCO/SNCO with 5 young children, so not a lot of money. Although I was able to buy a new Model 29 & 586. But, I really liked those SS Semi-autos along with 625 revolvers. Now the kids are gone & I'm retired, so I've started accumulating/collecting those firearms, much to the wife's chagrin. My first treasure is a like-new 4566 TSW (without black light rail). I picked up another TSW with a light rail; I also have a 4586 & 4506-1. I just bought a NIB 4516-1, and yes it's not been fired! I'm looking at 4516-2's, but I just missed some really nice ones in the $425 to $525 range on GB because the Search Feature is sometimes finicky. Thanks again for your knowledge on this Forum and I look forward to reading & learning from your posts! V/r Les
