Funny You Should Mentione That . . .
. . . Not an hour ago I shelved the removal of a rear sight on a Model 1076 (10 mm) just because I can't.
Silly me, it even had a set screw that I thought, "once removed it might just be a simple slide-on, slide-off deal."
Um, nope.
I've taken apart the remainder of the handgun, so I don't exactly fear doing such things. I just don't particularly care to beat up a good gun trying to do what is supposed to be a good thing.
But like so many other S$W sights, one presumes somebody at S&W must've instructed someone else to make nitro the only viable means to quickly remove a rear sight.
For all I know S&W might actually indemnify those who attempt rear sight removals, as have I.
Please let me know if they do.
Later.

If the set screw has been removed, lay the slide down on the right side and put a few drops of penetrating oil like Kroil along the seam between the slide dovetail and sight housing. Let it sit overnight so the oil can work its way down under the sight body. Then, take a non-marring hammer or small block of soft pine or something to protect the sight body and give it some light taps from left to right. It should come out with a minimum of pressure, not like a sight that is truly dovetailed into place and requires a sight pusher or some serious whacks with a punch.
