59-series curved insert
Does anyone have experience with the curved insert for 59-series pistols? I’ve been offered one for a decent price but I haven’t really seen many guns with it so I was curious if anyone has it and likes it.

I've got one on my 659 and I like the look and feel of the palm swell grip.

I have them on my 459 & 559... they don't come up for sale very often, I'd snap it up if the price is reasonable.
With a set of thinner Uncle Mike's grips, it makes these 2nd Gen's feel much less "blocky"

This is my 459 I carried for several years as a LEO. For me the arched backstrap made a big, positive difference.

By chance, do model 39 wood grips work with that back strap on a 59 series pistol?

Good question! I just tried a set of M-39 grips on my 559 with the arched back strap, it does not work.

For me the 59/659 instinctivly points low. Adding the curved back strap brought the natural POA up nicely.

And First Gen’s.
Well I hope you got it for that decent price. I got a few years ago when they were readily available. I don’t see them for sale much recently.
It just depends on how it feels to you. I’d have to agree, at least for me the curved/arched grip insert combined with the thin Uncle Mike’s panels are perfect.
I apologize for continually repeating myself on this subject but the question was again brought up. I also like to repost the picture of my very different 59 with the above installed.

Not really. Different shape.
I had a set of pachs on mine with the arched backstrap and it made the grip too big for my liking. I never checked around for what might be available in wood.

If I recall correctly, that was the reason S&W designed the third generation pistols with an arched back strap. Delrin stocks with a flat back strap came later during the third gen production.

Probably not news to anyone, but that is also my understanding for the reason behind the arched MSH on the 1911A1.

It definitely was the reason for the arched mainspring housing introduced as part of improvements in the Model 1911-A1.
