Default Model 41 question

Hi, all

I've had a 41 with a standard 5" bull barrel for some years now. Yesterday I bought a standard 7" barrel rated at 99% online for $295. A fair price in my opinion, but this one comes with a compensator attached. I couldn't pass it up.

I've never had one before. How are they held on? Set screw? Are they to be removed periodically for maintenance?

Do a Google search!
Basically, pull the slide back & lock after removing the magazine.
Pull down the trigger guard at the front of it and pull down. The barrel can then be lifted off.

Sorry, I meant how does the compensator come off? Believe me, I've removed the barrel many times. Any chance of the compensator being stuck on there?

There should be a screw on the front of the barrel.

Are you talking about how to remove the barrel or the compensator?

Ah, it's held on with a screw then. Sorry, I've just never seen one of these up close before.

The comp.

(and the original barrel is a 5.5, not 5.0)

There's a single screw that secures the muzzle break to the 7-3/8" barrels (as shown above), but a round section of the barrel sticks out about 3/8" from the front. 7" barrels had no provision for a brake. If you remove the brake from a 7-3/8" barrel, you'll want to install the "False Muzzle" that S&W supplied with the guns.

The compensator does get very dirty in the grooves of it and is a small pain in the butt to clean out. I agree with putting a false nose piece on instead. It never needs cleaning at all. Check your private mail box.

Thank you. I'll let you know as soon as it arrives. I've had the bull barrel for years. Time for something new.
