Friend has a 41 from 1959. We used standard CCI .22 ammo, and experienced failure to eject about 1 every 20 rounds. Looked like the spent casings are stuck sideways on the way to being ejected.

I know there are a lot of variables, but is this common on ammo type or is it ejector related?

The 41 does prefer match grade ammo. I have good luck with most standard speed but have not tried CCI. There are some reasonable prices out there for “match” speed ammo. Good luck.

Ok, I am ignorant on different ammo for a .22. Other .22 Smiths I have shot prefer CCI, and I thought the Smith .22 line was originally designed around CCI?

First, is the 41 clean and lightly lubricated? If so, try several types of ammo to see if its ammo related or gun related. Even CCI can have an "off" lot. I had some CCI subsonic that would "crack" every few rounds. 41 was designed well before CCI started making rimfire ammunition (1962) It was designed primarily for target ammunition.

If cleaning and lubricating do not resolve the issue then get yourself a Volquartsen Extractor for the M41. I believe Midway has them for about 11 bucks. The Volquartsen (forged - not stamped out) is a better extractor than the S&W replacements from my experience. Extractors do not last forever and do wear!

It is a 10 minute job and only requires a punch, hammer and a bench block of some sort to drift out block pin. The instructions are below and you can click on pictures for more detailed views. Go slow and you should not have any problems.



Model 41 maintenance

I agree as my 1958 just started doing the same Tuesday night. It really needs a good cleaning which I hope to do this week-end.
