Default 5906 and bullet weight???

I have an early 5906 with non Novak fixed sights. We have all heard the "rule" that model 10s, 36s, etc. have thier sights regulated for 158gr. bullets. Is there such a "rule" for S&W 9mm? 115, 124, or 147gr? I tend to shoot a little low with 115 and 124gr bullets, however my nephew shoots dead on, so maybe it is just me. We both shoot at the same POA. with Hi Powers and I'll be darned if I can figure out what I am doing wrong with the 5906.

You can shoot different grain ammo to verify accuracy, but there is no point in wasting money on higher priced rounds for practice when what really matters is how tight your shot group is after unloading a mag. A two-inch group a little low and left will hardly matter to the criminal on the receiving end of that strike force.

RalphK22, I've owned production and Performance Center 5906s with Novak sights. Within my experience, no two people are likely to shoot any of them, or any other iron sighted handgun or rifle, to the same POA/POI. No two humans have the exact same sight picture, grip, trigger press, etc. Now two people may happen to shoot whatever gun to the same POA/POI, but don't count on it. Nothing has to be wrong with shooter or gun.

Forgot to add, there is no rule. Each gun is an entity onto itself. This or that gun might perform best with this or that ammo. Only testing will show what works best in that particular pistol, for a particular shooter....

My 5906 doesn't seem to care what bullet weight I use. That being said, at the time it was developed, I believe that 147gr was the standard 9mm LE bullet weight.

If it were me, I'd try a box of 147 and a box of 124. I don't know that it matters what works best for your nephew, it's what works best for you that counts.

Not sure if the 5906 sights were regulated to any particular weight, but I also tend to shoot a bit lower with the 115gr (on the rare occasions I use them). Generally I stick to 124gr and 147gr, and find that both of them shoot to POI for me.

My 5906 also shoots low with 115gr. I need to try 124 & 147.

I will have to give 147gr. bullets a try. As a rule of thumb a heavier bullet should raise the point of impact. I generally reload everything, but have been shooting Federal 115 grainers and my 124gr. reloads also print a little low for me, but all are grouping well.

Now here is the kicker, I am having the same issue with a 4506. It has adjustable sights so no problem correcting that. My nephew hits dead on with it too and we generally shoot any given handgun to the same point of aim. I know I have past on all my good and bad shooting habits to him and it bugs me, that we are so different with these two Smiths. both these guns are fairly new to us both. He is 18 and I am 54 and there is no doubt his eyes are better than mine and his groups are generally tighter than mine but we mostly hit the same area of a target. I can still shade him with a revolver though, it is more natural to me, being an old school, old fart.
