59X6's in Canada... maybe...
I'm in Vancouver for the week.
At the airport, I noticed the tell-tale glimmer of stainless, clad in a black sheath of what looked like Delrin... looming conspicuously in the holsters of two officers.
I know there are 59XX guns still in service with Canadian police--RCMP, I believe. The guys I saw could have been RCMP, I guess (sans the steeds). Or maybe border services agents?
Either way, I don't think they were P226s or any other metal-framed autos. I'm guessing they were Smiths.
Just thought ya'll might be interested to hear that there's some 3rd gens still rockin duty holsters, somewhere in the world.

I still see 5946's in the holsters of NYPD officers. Sigs and Glocks are more common but definitely some S&W 3rd gens still on the job.

Just shows how some folks have Good Taste in their duty weapons. Most everything S&W is top notch for this type of service.

I think the RCMP issued the 5946 or 5943. Isn't that what the Sgt at Arms of the Canadian Parliament used to stop the attack a couple of years ago?
As I recall the 59xx is no longer issued to NYPD, but those that have them still can carry them. Well, as I recall from a different part of the forum, there is at least one NYPD Sgt still carrying a S&W revolver.
LAPD still authorizes officers to carry 3rd Gens, and again I remember a recent thread where an officer recertified with a 4506.
Are the WVSP still using their Melonite 4566TSWs?
There are probably small agencies and individual officers with discerning taste in firearms that still have 3rd Gens in their holsters.
Then there's us!

Yes, I'm pretty sure that maniac was taken out with a 5946.
That's interesting that there's still 3rd gens in certain LAPD and NYPD holsters. For some reason I kinda thought the CHP 4006s were maybe the last to go... but that's a different agency, obviously.
I'd be curious to know if the WVSP are still using their melonite 4566s. Because... when they retire them... I wanna know when, where and how I can get a surplus gun.

Just got a text message back from a friend who is an Inspector with 26 years service to the RCMP. He still carries the original 5946 issued to him, although not the first weapon issued to him. He doesn't remember the exact date but thinks it was issued to him in early 1996.
Class III
BTW, even the RCMP is limited to 10 round mags. Several years ago I offered to bring him a few "Pre Ban" 15 round mags, he declined the offer as he had never been issued 15 round mags and would have a hell of a hard time explaining how and where he acquired the mags if he ever had to use them.

I was the one who started that NYPD sergeant with the Model 10. That was probably 2 years or so ago. Maybe 3, so he’s probably retired. But either way, revolvers are officially retired from the NYPD. None are authorized for duty carry. Anymore. I believe off duty is still Ok, but I’m sure a NyPd guy will confirm that. It’s a shame. Wouldn’t have been much longer that anybody with a duty wheel gun was gonna retire anyway. 1992 was the last time they were issued. Should have let guys retire with what they came on with.

WVSP still carry their 4566TSW but are in the process of selecting a new duty weapon. Theres a WVSP trooper on AR15.com & said they were hoping to have made their selection by the end of the year.
Funny thing is that he hates the 4566TSW but when I offered to buy his after they switch he told me he plans to burn his credit card up buying all the duty guns he can. Probable plans to flip them.

I find that "10 round mags" very hard to believe. I retired 3 years ago from Canada's largest Municipal (City) Police Service and we carrried City issued Glock 22's with (3) 15 round magazines. There is a magazine capacity exemption for law enforcement up here.

Interesting. I'm a potential buyer.
Just curious. Did he say why he hates it?

All I can say is I've seen and examined his 5946 and the 10 round magazines he was carrying. At that time he was assigned to the Snow Lake, Manitoba Detachment. He is now with the Humboldt, SK Detachment.

The RCMP have NEVER issued 10 round mags for the 5946. Your friend may have been issued a 3943, which has a 9 round mag. My duty pistol has 17 round mags, Agency owned firearms are exempt from mag restrictions.
