S&W 1026 Black Slide
Hi everyone!
I just picked this 1026 up. I thought I remembered reading that a few of these came from the factory with a coated slide, but I can't seem find that info now. Any ideas?
Has the will fire with magazine removed warning on slide.

As far as I know no black slides were ever made at the factory on the 1026 or any other models of the 10 series. Largest LE agency to use the 1026 was VSP they wanted the mag disconnect removed.

Looks like some kind of aftermarket 'parkerizing'. Since both the slide and the frame are both stainless steel,could/should have been done to the frame too. Looks good as it is. A totally black 10XX series pistol would probably look great,a 1004.

Could this possibly be a VSP piece? Also, is that curved grip common on these?

Seems like most of the 4526/76 pistols I've seen have curved grips and most 1026/76 pistols have straight or palm-swell grips. Does your pistol have the two punch marks under the decock lever indicating service under recall?

Yes, recall dimples are present as is an upside down T on the trigger guard.

Stainless will not accept parkerizing, so that can be ruled out. It could be the Black-T coating by Birdsong.

It could very well be Melonite. If I am not mistaken, the M & P 45s we used to carry were stamped "STAINLESS" very prominently on the slide.
I'm of the opinion that this is NOT a factory gun.

The expensive route is to get a letter.
The cheap route is to keep searching the interwebs 
Wouldn't be the first time someone changed slides to get a two-tone effect.
Also wouldn't be the first time someone had it coated with "whatever"
because it was beat up/otherwise scratched/dinged/rusty.
I'm still trying to figure out who had a CS9's lower chromed, but left the slide alone??
Ya never know what or why someone did something odd to a pistol, but it made sense to them
Probably a lot could be answered by the last owner??

I'd say some kind of cerrakote type coating or some other spray on bake on including regular paint. If it were the melonite / nitrocarburized type treatment (there are aftermarket places that can do this) then I don't think the wear showing in your pictures on the black part would look like it does.

This gun as bought from a 3rd party who was liquidating an estate. The gun looks absolutely brand new except for that little biit of slide wear. I'm starting to think it is an old vsp gun since it has the curved grip, no magazine disconnect. It's ser # also falls in between known vsp pieces (I know that isn't conclusive proof). Might be time to seek a letter.
