4506 guide rod housing damage
Picked up a 4506 and already took it to the range. No issues with function. While cleaning it I noticed that the guide rod housing had a large triangle portion missing. Is this normal? I have a 5906 and the housing is totally intacted. See photo attached. Thanks

Seems to be normal for this model, not sure if it's done at the factory or just a very common breaking point that occurs when removing the long barrel. I have a 4506 (R4) and a 4505 that both arrived (used) with this feature. I took the liberty of rounding the edges and corners of the break on my 4506, in order to possibly prevent any snagging and strengthen against future cracking.

It's there to facilitate the removal of the barrel in the 5" Big Boy 3rd Gens. I don't believe any of the 4 1/4" models (4566, 4576, 4586, etc.) have this triangle cut. FWIW

Denver Dick is correct; that cut is not present on the slide on my 4566.

It's perfectly normal and nothing to be concerned about
That chunk is/was broken out at the factory to facilitate getting the barrel in and out. It's present on all the five inch guns ie. 1006 and 4506 et al. There are a couple other things that S&W tended to pre-break that were prone to cracking, 4513TSW slides for one.
Cheers
Bill
