10 mm
Hello all!! I had a discussion with a friend about the 10 mm and the 1006. Does anyone know if the 1006 (or any other of the 10 mm) was ever offered with a square trigger guard? I am positive that I remember pictures of such in the early 1990's, but most of my archives of that era are long gone. Thanx in advance.

You may be confusing the 10MM Auto Model 1006 with the 45ACP Model 4506
They are almost identical in appearance and share the same holster family.
The 4506 was built with both trigger guards.

I've only seen 10xx guns with...
Type 2 trigger guard, elongated like the type 1 but without the squared finger rest.
and...
Type 3 trigger guard, short and rounded.
Never have seen or heard of a 10xx with a type 1 trigger guard however that certainly doesn't mean there might not be one out there somewhere

1006 Prototype
All the earliest gun magazine tests of production models had the rounded trigger guard, from what I see.
However, the 1006 prototype that Shooting Times ran an article on in July-1989 was clearly a modified 4506 having the square trigger guard & 2nd Gen type rear sight.

The square trigger guard went away with the stepped frame and ribbed slide when S&W commonized the 4506-1/1006 frame and slide.

I have no experience with the 10mm in the S&W's, but I do have a Colt Delta Elite Stainless (early model). It definitely has more recoil with full power loads. To me, it's recoil feels a lot like that of a 4 inch barreled 357 Magnum.

Hoo-whee! Much shorter barrel and 10 ounces lighter. Again, I have no experience with that particular firearm, but I'd wager it barks and bites similar to my S&W 640-1.

Thank you all for your input. Was out of town, hence too long to respond. I too, have not seen any 1006 with squared trigger guards or the slim dust cover/ stepped frame. However, I did find some info in my archives. It is in a 1991 G&A annual issue. The article reads "The magnificent ten" and there, the author tries out some 10 mm hand loads through a 1006. Apparently, at least two 1006's as I may see both adjustable and Novak sights on the pistol he is holding. There is one picture never the less where a 4506 and a 1006 are next to each other, (or so the comment says) and they are both square trigger guards. At the end of the magazine, there is a list of the available 3rd gems for 1991, and one may clearly see there that it was one year that all 3 styles of trigger guards were in production/available. MSRP, are also listed. Will try to upload pictures now...

So, now, question for those of you who own a 1006 and a 4506 or 4506-1. (Or those who may know, regardless if they have them or not.) Are the top components (slide/barrel) interchangeable with the frames among these two calibers? This is an academic sort of question, as I am not am not nor have been a fan of the 10 mm, but like I said, I had a conversation that was left in the middle, so I thought to ask the knowledgeable! Thanx in advance friends!

I can't see the SN# on the 1006 but it sure looks like the prototype in the article I mentioned. Even has the old style metal base magazine with a rubber bumper on the bottom, just like the prototype's. I'm not aware of any production 3rd Gens that came with that type of butt plate.
In fact, that same picture (your's), of both a 4506 & 1006, is in a Oct-1989 article in Handguns magazine with another close-up showing the X487 serial number.

I'm pretty sure that the photo of various rounds in ballistic gel has been photoshopped. I've never seen the photo with the 10mm included.

I have carried DW 1911s in Govt and CCO configurations in 10mm for years and years.
The CCO is a little sparky, but my wrists are still OK.
