What's the difference?
What's the difference between a Modell 39-2, and a 439? The only thing I see that's obvious is an ambidextrous safety.

439 had a different adjustable rear sight (I don't agree that it was an improvement but many do) but almost all can agree that the 39-2/59 rear sight was not "combat durable" and the 439's certainly is.
The 439 (and all 2nd and 3rd Gens) added a firing pin lock that made the pistol drop safe... but it is definitely at the cost of a trigger pull. I have never yet met a S&W 2nd Gen 9mm who's trigger pull wasn't a mere shadow of the sweet trigger of a 39-2.

Is that the sight with the big guards on them? All the pictures I see online seem to have them. The one I was looking at today didn't have them. Just what looked like the standard sight I'm used to seeing on the 39-2.

Most of my 2nd Gens have the fixed sight just as pictured above. I don't own a 439 but in my experience... I have not yet, not once and not ever found a 439 with a fixed rear sight. Every 439 that I have ever seen anywhere has the gangly winged/protected rear sight.
That rear sight looks... ummm, durable.

If the 439 you saw today did not have the winged adjustable rear sight... then it should have looked like the picture above.
The 39/59 had the windage only adjustable "lollipop" rear sight but no 2nd Gen ever had that lollipop unless it was a Frankengun pieced together from parts.

No, I guess it had the fixed sights like the one pictured. It didn't have the winged sights that's for sure.
I guess the 539 was the steel frame version?
Can you tell I don't know much about these things?

439=aluminum alloy receiver/carbon steel slide, black/blue or nickel plated finish.
539=carbon steel receiver/carbon steel slide, blue or nickel plated finish.
639=stainless steel receiver, stainless steel slide.
All of them were standard with a drift adjustable rear sight, front sight was a ramp integral to the slide.
All of them could be ordered with a fully adjustable rear sight that was protected by steel wings and a taller front sight that was integral to the slide.
All of them had the firing pin lock system that would be carried over into the 3rd generation pistols.
My 439 has the drift adjustable rear sight. I previously owned a 39-2 and honestly, I prefer the second generation sight, but the third generation sights are the absolute best of the breed.

I've always gotten along quite well with the lollipop sights on my 39's and my 59. But they aren't durable in a rough environment.

S&W offered an adjustable rear sight with a lollipop base that fit the 39-2 / 59.
Pictured below:
I waited a long time for the part to ship... probably around 1977. It looks pretty fragile. My criticusm is the rear sight notch was pretty shallow.
