S&W Mod 41 feed and ejection issues.

I purchased this gun about 8 weeks ago new. I took it out to the range and I used three different types of ammo Federal Automatch Target, 40 gr 1200 fps, CCI 40 gr 1070 fps, and Geco 40 gr 1148 fps. I had at least 5 misfires FTF, FTE, double loading and stove piping every mag about 350 rounds total. I did send the gun in and just received it back here is what they say they did.

Polish Barrel and chamber, Replace bolt face, and replace extractor.

I took it to the range today and yes it got better but of the three types of ammo listed above I still had at least one to two failures ever mag. I went to the counter and picked up a box of what they had it was Armscor 36gr High velocity hollow point. the whole box shot without an issue, I purchased three more and never an issue a total of 200 rounds. I switched back to the other ammo and still had the issues. I don't want to buy hollow point for target shooting its a waste of money.

My question's are;
Should I send it back to S&W?
Keep trying different ammo until I find something less expensive it likes?
Is it ok to use High velocity in this gun?
What does everybody here use?
Put it back into the safe and let it become a closet queen?


Granted I may be a bit spoiled by some of my other guns STI 2011, CZ Chezmate, and 226 x5, but at around $1200.00 for a .22LR I would think it should have way less problems.

I will say the times it does shoot it is just as accurate as any of my other competition guns...

Although my 41 has no problem eating CCI Std. Velocity ammo, I have the problem with some other brands as well as the CCI Mini Mags etc.

A friend told me that the 41 likes to be shot WET and he rubs a little oil with a Q Tip on the first round (last one in) and he eliminated the problem with his.

Another tip is to thoroughly clean the breech end of the barrel. I've also inserted a small 22LR cleaning brush attached to a electric drill and cleaned the chamber at the breech with excellent results.
 
New M41

I also have a new model 41. I had the same kind of problem with FTEs until I had about 1200 to 1500 rounds through it! I guess it's because the tolerances are so tight when it's made it has a very long break in.… At least mine did. I tried the drop of oil on the first casing in a Mag, tied HV, etc. everything I read people seem to say about the same thing that it takes a long time to break it in. I took it to the range on Friday and ran about 250 rounds through five different magazines using CCISV ammunition and I didn't have one FTE the whole time! So, in my case anyway it's just keep on plugging away and I think eventually you'll be happy.

I just went through this.
The oil on the first round didn't work for me. I laid out a silicone cleaning cloth and dropping a box of CCI sv on it and just pushed them around for two seconds and shot them, perfect not one fouled. Went through 200 like that and every one shot fine. After that I just started shooting them dry and the gun works perfectly. Maybe something got lubed or broken in not sure but so far so good. It's worth a try .

Mark Bianco Welcome to the Forum. CCI SV is the recomended ammo for your m41. Do not use the high powered stuff in it as all you are doing is beating the gun up with it. The SV is perfect for these pistols and usually the most accurate in them as well.
 
I bought my 41 new three years ago. My experiences were similar to yours until I put about 2,000 rounds through it, and then it "settled in." Mine really likes CCI Standard Velocity ammo. I'm shooting Bullseye more and more, so, hopefully, my investment will pay off. At 73 plus, I'm a participant, not a competitor. Enjoy your pistol. Money spent on quality is never wasted.
 
Model 41's are finicky - especially the new ones with the cheap thin chincy magazines. The best ammo for this particular S&W seems to be the CCI standard Velocity (1070 fps) which is what I use in mine. While some do claim that their M41's smooth out after 500 - 1000 rounds or so, if that does not happen for you I'd send it back to them (WITH ALL your Magazines). To spend all that money for a Target Gun that does not function properly, SUCKS!
 
First off I want to thank all who positively contributed. Update I took the gun to the range today and although it doesn't work well with the Federal or Geco. I purchased a brick of CCI SV .22 LR and out of the 300 shot I fired there were no issues. Perhaps the other CCI's were a bad lot? Long story short now that I found a decent correct bullet to shoot that shoots well I am happy with the gun....

Sir (I am assuming your male if not I apologize.) I did research this issue and read carefully each and every post pertaining to the issues inherent to the 41 before I posted. If you would of carefully read my post it was not oh I have this issue what's going on post, it was more geared towards getting feedback on what other owners of the 41 would do if they had the issues. If you look at my original post I did ask specific questions. Such as;

IMHO posting comments as you did does nothing but raise your post count. I guess if you have nothing better to say. Then one should follow the golden rule when it comes to a forum posting. Don't post anything at all.
 
Mark, Leinster Lad did nothing wrong other then point out that this topic has been discussed on here a lot of times. I know he did not mean to offend you. He had NO way of knowing what all you researched prior to asking your questions at all. Most of us on here use the CCI SV ammo as it works so well in our M41's. And yes you can get a bad batch of that on rare occasions. It has happened to me as well.

For a new member to this forum, you sure have a lot of attitude.

For the record;
I have been interested in passing on my knowledge of the Model 41 for some years now.
If you had bothered to research my posts, you would find a LOT of information, explanations, possible rectifications and just good old fashioned helpful advice regarding these fine pistols.

When I read your post, it was just the same questions that have been asked and answered 100 times before.
In fact, an identical thread is currently under discussion regarding this very issue, which I have contributed to possibly excessively.

So when I read your post, asking the same old questions, I had 3 choices.

Do I say nothing ?

I did think about this option after reading your first post. ( yep, it was THAT obvious )


or


Do I contribute the exact same info as I have written 100 times before ?

To be honest, I am getting tired of saying the same basic things over and over to people who choose not to listen to all of the good advise that has been given before.

Do I simply let you know that this is a common question and a simple search of the forum(s) will give you the answers that you are looking for ?

Come on.... you were asking about what ammo to use ??

How many times has that been discussed, and what has been the OVERWHELMING answer ?


Asking about HV Ammo? really ? as above.


Asking to send it back to S&W, even though you had just received it back from them ?

They polished the chamber, replaced the bolt and extractor.
Pretty sure there would not be anything wrong with the gun.



And in the end, it turned out that with a fresh box of CCI SV ammo the M41 works perfectly.


So..... next time you ask for advice, try not to get upset if the answer you get is to simply open your eyes.

Funny, I am taking a break after disassembly and cleaning of a new to me Model 41. Hopefully I don't need to look at all the possible issues... Will know after a range trip. I do know they need to be CLEAN and oiled. Bought a new S&W mag so will see how that works as well compared to the original 1970 version magazine.

Excellent, hope you have a great time at the range.

Just remember, these are very simple machines that operate in a "balanced" way.

Everything must work together in just the right way for satisfactory operation.

Like any machine, there will be tolerances in each of the "areas" of operation, and sometimes one area at the "+ve" end of the tolerance might not work with another area with a "-ve" tolerance.

Tightness of the chamber is a good example.

Whilst it may be in tolerance, the effect may be just enough to slow the expelling of the spent case just enough to cause the slide to not move rearward far enough or fast enough to eject the spent case or chamber the next round.

The old "drop of oil" trick lubes the chamber just enough to lower the friction on the case coming out of the chamber, allowing the eject/load cycle to occur.

The reason it works is because it is changing the frictional tolerance of the chamber to an area that allows the slide to function correctly.

Remember, the EXTRACTOR does NOT remove the spent case from the chamber. ( gas pressure does that )
It only holds the spent case against the bolt face until the ejector can kick it out the side !
