Default Value of 39-2

Local dealer has a very nice 39-2 for sale; with box and papers. I'm a revolver guy so this is not in my wheelhouse. Any one with approx. value? He is asking $1200.00.

That dealer is either wildly misinformed or he is looking for a sucker. As you are a revolver guy, consider that a 39-2 has a similar few traits as a Model 10 or a 28-2 -- both are totally fantastic revolvers of amazing utility and also of large historical significance BUT were produced in tremendous volume, so they are almost always bargains... their true value is as a fantastic shooter.

They produced nearly 400,000 of the 39-2 pistol, for one example to sell at $1,200 would need some very significant reason -- and proven for sure with a factory letter.

If the pistol he's offering is dead mint, appearing unused/NIB/mint and the box is in mint shape, it likely still tops out under a thousand unless he is some extremely well-known and highly respected dealer.

$1,200 is soooo lofty that it actually makes me wonder if he has some story that he's attempting to sell with it. If you visit him again, please ask and also find out condition. It needs to be museum quality.

Dealer by me had a comparable one a couple months ago. Was asking $600 but $500 would have got it. Not sure what he ended up selling it for.

As a side discussion... allow me to plant a seed in your brain. 39's are sweethearts and most folks just love 'em, and for good reason. I personally believe that if you enjoy S&W 1st, 2nd or 3rd Gen pistols -- you MUST own at least one 39-2. I have three 39's myself.

I really believe the Model 10/28-2 comparison. So great that S&W sold them easily, so they just kept making them because people just kept buying them. If you are a S&W revolver guy and you don't have a 10/28-2, you may actually be wandering aimlessly through life, blissfully unaware if why you simply MUST own one.

You can pretty much throw the Model 17 in there also. They cost a bit more but also aren't rare, S&W made tons so finding and adding one to the stable is neither difficult nor expensive.

That's where the 39-2 exists. Consider this a public service measage for anyone and everyone -- you need a 39-2!

I love the 39s... but I don't think I'd pay that even for one like this

(Happens to be a 39 No dash)

Way too much....did an average of the prices for the last 15 sold on Gunbroker and it's $545. One gun went for $1,225 (I didn't count it) but it was a 99% factory nickel, totally complete with tools, etc. and 29 bidders. (So it was probably worth the sale price.

Unless this one is really special...it's a no go. Prices of these 15 sold on gunbroker range from a low of $315 to a high of $850....with most -- 8 --in the $400 +- range.

If it were me, I'd pass and keep shopping.

Do yourself a favor and listen to these guys . I too was a revolver guy and then someone opened my eyes to the semi world . Once you buy one , you can't stop . There's a forum member I regularly ask for info , no harm in asking . That is how I learned about semis , 2nd and 3rd gens . If you don't know , ask .

Thanks guys, I do have several M10's and 28's, love em and thaks for the comparison. My background with Smith semi's is limited to the M41 and M46, from my days of match shooting. The 39 I looked at is very nice and fits so nice in my hand. Really is over priced.

There is always a chance it’s a rare steel frame variant. That would push it over a grand at least.

If blue, $600 - $700
If nickel, $700 - $850

At least that's what I've been seeing in my neck of the woods.

Condition is EVERYTHING!

I wouldn’t give $1200 for 4 model 39’s.... bought one to carry off duty, hated the grip angle, trigger pull was atrocious and accuracy was reflective of those attributes. Tried a model 59 with same results. I wanted to like these models but I just could not deal with owning a gun I didn’t want to carry or shoot.

Ouch!

I'll admit that I was insanely fortunate to find a LNIB 39-2 with everything (including the original Bill of Sale) for a very affordable price never to be duplicated again in my remaining lifetime even if I live to be 100. Such things don't usually happen to me. I mean, never.

But the interesting part of the story is that I had found two Model 39-2's that same day (in different shops) that were both like new and both reasonably priced. My big mistake was not going back for the other one... the more expensive of the two. It didn't have its factory box and it only came with one newer vintage 3906/909 Magazine, but it was still a great deal... just not as insanely good a deal as the one I did buy.

I did go back eventually for that "boxless one", but it had been sold. He who hesitates is lost. Another interesting point: The grips on that second one were outstanding in the extreme... not just in perfect condition but Picasso-grade artistic too, the absolute best factory 39-2 grips that I had ever seen. Price on the second gun: $425+Tax.

I agree the DA pull is not great but the SA and reset are very good. I find it quite accurate for me but YMMV. Not a carry gun but good range gun and fun to own.

Default 39-2 Purchase

Yesterday I bought a 39-2 S/N A169xxx (date about 1971-72) new in the box with all tools and info for $425.00 out the door at a local dealer. Cleaned it up since it had the original lubrication and it is beautiful

I bought a gently used police trade in in exc. cond. without the box or tools for 295 a few yrs ago. Great shooter. IMO that price is way too high.
