Default 3913 Lady Smith with full hammer?

Hi guys,

New to the forum, just bought a 3913 Lady Smith on GB. It has a full hammer (which I like), but this is the only one I've seen like this. Was this an option S&W offered, an early or late version, or was it just that someone swapped out the original bobbed hammer at some point in time?

Thanks!

Dr.Z

While it's possible that this was offered as a factory option, it's far more likely to have been a conversion after it was sold. Swapping a spurred for none spurred hammer is a fairly simple job.

The fact that it's a LS version makes it seem less likely that it left the factory this way.

Thanks Gary. That's kinda what I thought, but wasn't entirely sure.

You're welcome. I've learned over my years hanging out here that with S&W guns you should never say "Never!"

We've seen enough one offs that came from the factory, but were never cataloged that we've learned that anything is possible. At least in the days when they made most stuff more or less by hand.

The only way to be 100% sure is to get a factory letter. Personally, if you like it that way and it works well, you might just want to enjoy that fine firearm.

I kind of like the spurred hammer. Not sure why. I guess it gives you the option of a SA shot like a revolver.

Thats part of the reason I jumped at this one (not to mention condition and price). I prefer the spurred hammer look, too. Plus, if my wife ever carries this it would make it easier for her to get that first shot off, rather than having to struggle against a heavy (for her), DA trigger pull.

I carry a 908 in AIWB the spurred hammers poke me in the belly when sitting or bending...

Depends on your purpose intended.. these are better carry guns than range guns.. DA out of leather is the way it works.

Haven't seen anyone mention it, but if you've got the original box in which The Lady was packed at the Mothership, the answer to your question is found on its end panel.

Later.

No, unfortunately it did not come with the box or papers. But I only paid $455 (plus $20 shipping), for it. Haven't received it yet, but based on the pictures it look as is it was fired very little and rarely carried (if at all).

EXACTLY. Did it to my 3913, 4516, & 469. I simply used hammers from the full size versions. To me, the guns were unacceptable in their original factory configuration. Now, they are perfect. GARY

Except for a couple of long ago Model 39s, all my TDA S&Ws have had spurless hammers. I prefer that style for carry.
There's a caveat to my preference. My long ago father, who taught me to shoot, had a Walther P-1, the altered post-war, alloy framed P-38. He taught me to catch the hammer with my off thumb while using the safety. Thus I lowered the hammer slowly as the mechanical dropper did its job.
From a mechanical standpoint, the process is probably unnecessary. It's just the way my dad taught me.
I'm older than I once was and more fondly remember his teachings. Now, when I handle my new carry gun (a recently acquired 469) I wish it had a spur hammer. I suppose some day I'll get one. Since the 2nd gen have a half-cock notch, I can't use a 3rd gen hammer (at least, I don't think I can), but maybe a 2G will come my way.

I think that 2nd and 3rd Gen hammers are interchangeable. However, 1st Gen hammers are not. The 2nd and 3rd Gen hammers are marked not for use in Model 39/59.

Only the 1st Gen have have a "half cock notch".

Again, that's my recollection.

My 469 had a 1/2 cock notch, but lost it when I put in a gen 3 hammer. Gun works just fine. GARY.

Thanks for the information. I didn't think the new hammer would work. Was anything else changed? Also, is any hand-fitting needed for the new hammer as on, say, a Colt Govt?
