Hi, I've been trying for some time to find someone who knows something (anything) about this gun. Back in 1992, I saw an article in Guns & Ammo or some other gun mag about the FBI ordering 1000 .40 cals for their HRTs and they were to be made according to some FBI spec in the S&W Performance Shop. There was a picture in the article and I thought it was a nice looking gun and I was sort of in the market for a .40cal. The article went on to say that the FBI was not going to take all of the 1000 gun order and it was likely that the remainder of the 1000 they didn't take were going to be for sale to the general public. As it turned out, I was going to my favorite local gun shop the next day and they were S&W dealers, so I asked them about it. They made a few phone calls and a day or so later, they called and said they had reserved one for me, but it would be 3 or 4 months and the pricetag was some astronomical amount (for 1992).

After a few months they had the gun for me and I proceded to shoot up a few hundred rounds and it is a very nice gun. It is full size, all stainless with Novak sights and it has a BarSto barrel. Sometime in the past I was advised no parts were interchangable with any S&W production line gun but don't know if that is correct. It looks a bit like a 4006 except as you can see in the pics, there is not much on the sides except the S&W name, the Perf Center emblem and the SN. The SN is PCD0xxx and is below 200. Inside the frame and slide are stamped "211" (not the SN) and the barrel is hand engraved with "211". The rounds are matte and the sides are polished. Mag capacity is 11 or 12 (don't remember and its down two floors from here and I'm too lazy to walk down and up again).

Since I bought the gun, I have NEVER seen another mention of it anywhere. I guess I'm curious because it just doesn't seem to exist in any reference books or catalogs or anywhere (that I've seen). Any info would be appreciated... thanks. See 5 pics at this link:

Welcome Pugster
You came to the right place.
The 4006 in question is the Tactical
Product code #104401 early or #170020 with the PCD prefix serial
I have never seen a serial over 200
The original price was listed at $1500
I never heard the FBI story before
Have a copy of the article?
The major components are all hand fitted and do not interchange with production pistols
The small parts do
Several here own examples of these early PC pistols
Good luck
Here is an old pic

Grinder,
Gee, what took so long to reply... my post was up a full 2 hrs and 16 mins. OK, thanks for the info. What's the meaning of the 211 stamping - doesn't match anything? I don't have the article anymore - I was overseas 25 years and the purchase was made while on home leave back in 1992. Things get lost in those circumstances. I'll see if I can locate it in archives of G&A or Combat Handguns - it would have been one of those I think. Thanks...

The 211 is the assembly number so the main components stay together. The barrel, frame, and slide assembly numbers should match.

Grinder... those numbers do match. I found an earlier exchange you had with snw19.357 from Dec, 2008 (4006 prod code 104401) and in that exchange, he (she) posted what looked like a sticker with SN and product code info. I don't have anything like that on my gun or the case or anywhere else. Where did that come from? Also, check your e-mails (the address in your profile)... thanks again.

Thread-surrection! Since this post perfectly fit what I am inquiring about.

NO model code , i.e. 4006, on frame...check
s/n of PCD00**...check
P.C. rollmark above trigger on R/H side...check
Slide, frame and barrel (hand-)marked (67)...check
Extended (enough to thread) Bar-Sto bbl....check
Hardshell blue P.C. marked case...check
End-label with product code 104401 and Special...check

I field-stripped it, to check for those matching numbers. It's got a good slathering of white lithium grease in there. Was a booger trying to align that barrel with the spherical bushing, but I got it.

Does anyone else have knowledge on this sucker?

Ha, after posting this, I found this great thread.
Mine looks like the one pictured as Item 57.
Thanks!

Sounds like you have a 40 Tactical from S&W's Performance Center (made in the early 90s, and just over 200 produced).

You certainly don't see many of the 40 Tactical pistols.

I have two of a very similar model (Tactical 40).

Is this a recent pick up? Post some pics.

Default 4006

Nice, VictorLouis. I believe this was the first PC pistol that S&W did for Lew Horton.

Here’s mine. It has a 5” barrel, not the 5.25” and the grips are what were on it when I bought it. Which I really like the look of. Supposedly it once belong to a S&W employee.

You have it mistaken. You have The .40 S&W Tactical Pistol with the PCD prefix. The Tactical .40 was two-tone with Tactical .40 billboard on the slide. And a FTC prefix, "National Firearms Training Center"

I missed out on a two-tone Tactical .40 on Gunbroker probably 5+ years ago, I was #2 bidder and it “felt” like just $25 more bid and she woulda been mine. (not likely but that’s how it felt!)

And ever since that auction I have pined over them! The pining finally slowed when I took delivery of my 4006 Limited. That pistol is amazing. I had it out last weekend. Sublime is perhaps the proper term.

The attachment of the Tactical .40 was generic from an internet search, I do not own one. A couple of pass my way and it seemed like there was something else going on at that time. So we’ll have to wait and see what the future brings.

Nice to hear about the limited, what a fantastic pistol.

The 4th edition, page 432 and 465, does call it the Tactical .40. Also 207 produced and product code 170020. Page 370, 104401, 240 produced.

The PCA is a 640, PCB & PCC, both 686. PCD & PCE, both 4006. One the .40 tact and the other the Comp .40. First two PC pistols that S&W did for Lew Horton. I really like the look of the flash chrome accessories over the later black. If only they were fitted with a magwell.

The pistol I posted is a Tactical Forty (code 170020; I mistyped and abbreviated as Tactical 40 earlier). I am aware of the two-tone Tactical 40 too.
