Model 41 false muzzle cap color question
Hi Everyone,
I recently picked up a false muzzle cap off of eBay and when I attached it to my model 41, the color was more of a purple / pink when compared to the barrel. The muzzle brake on the gun is black.
I understand both parts are aluminum and that the coating is anodized. I would believe there were variations in color through the normal anodizing process.
Has anyone else experienced this? I'm thinking I might have the part coated to match the original finish better.
Suggestions?

SR3006 Welcome to the forum from Canada. My false Nose cap is Black in color. I have never seen or heard of any other color then Black myself. Usually the same color as the Muzzle brake. Neither of mine are made of aluminum either.

The black color of typical S&W anodizing is created literally by adding dye to the anodizing bath. This is why anodizing is available in virtually any color that may be desired. As with virtually all dyes it can fade and sun bleach. often when this happens the anodizing can take on a purplish color, just like black fabrics do. This is one of the possibilities for the color you see.

Model 41 Experts,
It's my understanding the False Muzzle Caps were made of Aluminum & anodized Gloss Black like the Muzzle Brakes...Is this incorrect??
Or is it possible the Early Model 41 Pistols had Aluminum False Muzzle Caps & the Later ones produced were made of Steel & Blued...Just Curious??

I believe mine is of a newer production model and is made of a material similar to plastic. Least wise thats what it feels like to me and my worn out paws.

Barrie,
Thanks for the clarification...You really threw me a curve in your Earlier Post when you mentioned they weren't made of Aluminum & assumed you meant they were Steel!! Even so...I believe if you investigate further you'll find they are Aluminum!!

I have looked at them closely and cannot really tell you the difference. They are both very shiny and Black in color on my guns. With very limited feeling in both paws it still feels like plastic to me but may well be aluminum.

Thanks Alk8944,
I wonder if I can have it re-anodized without removing the original finish or if a cerakote or similar coating would work better?

Both nose cap and muzzle brake on mine are black , anodized aluminum.
In your case I would do as Mick Jagger says in his song....Paint it Black.
To have an odd color just might be a "collectible" , a coat of paint could be removed.
I think purple-pink sounds rather cool !

I have quite a few middle 41s and there is a slight variation in the color on the brakes. Some looking purple, it's my opinion age or cleaning products may have changed the color from the original black...
Also all brakes were aluminium same with the muzzle caps...
