Pre-production & experimental 9mm (pre-39s)
Research projected here on the very early pre-39s.
A long shot, I know ... anyone out there have a very early pre-39, including but not limited to experimental models and pre-production variation ?
Sometimes the pre-39s show up with an aftermarket frame. Sometimes any 39 (including 39-2 style) also show up with aftermarket frames. I'd like to see those, too, if anyone has.
There were two, 39 style 9mms that showed up on GunBroker in the past year that were re-framed (with aftermarket frame) 39s. Anyone remember seeing those ? One of those had a X prefix that was surely NOT an experimental model but rather a re-framed pre 39 on an aftermarket frame.
Mostly seeking data on serial numbers under 1100 and X-prefix guns.
Contact me directly at Email Link on this forum. Thank you. R.S. "Sal" Raimondi, Sr.

Mike, you are correct, however, I am seeking data on only the X and pre-production models. Should a Model 44 fall into the mix, I'd be thrilled

Actually, the Model 44 was the single action pistol. A handful of them were made for the Ordnance Dept but it was not sold commercially. The steel frame version of the Model 39 was called, wait for it, the Model 39.

Need a bit of clarification on some terms. Re-frame? and aftermarket?
a few of the X marked frames passed thru my shop back in the 1970s.
No big deal to the old guy I worked for.

Mike Experimental models ... most had a " X " prefix number. On the re-framed / aftermarket frame (one and the same) I've seen 39 frames with a BII ( not SSS, thank you Kevin) in a triangle (as maker) if I recall correctly. One of those that was advertised on Gunbroker had a X serial number but that number does not qualify as experimental. It is just a number assigned by whomever swapped the frame.
Similar to ... years back ... when GIs took home their 1911s many of them showed up on Essex (thank you Kevin) or other brand frames to be rid of the US markings.

The aftermarket steel frames that I'm familiar with have BII in a triangle which stands for Bole Industries Inc. Aftermarket M1911A1 frames were made by several manufacturers but I think the one you are thinking of, Sal, was actually Essex.

Sal thats an interesting topic for study, weren't those X serial guns made specifically for Military trials ?
If so might be hard to find any that escaped although I do recall seeing some pics of an X prefix gun on the forum some years ago.
Unfortunately cant remember when.

Yes, Kevin, you are correct. I was on the right track but hit the third rail there for a moment. Thank you.
