Need info on model 39

I’m a new user, so be patient with my posts. I’m looking for information such as date of manufacture, possible military use, possible value, etc... Anything will be helpful. Will try to post pics. First 3 serial numbers are 601 (only 5 digit serial number located above Model 39 stamp). Opposite side of pistol has a “PAT’S PENDING” stamp on the slide.

I inherited this gun from my dad who was retired Sergeant in HPD. I haven’t looked at this gun since he passed a couple of years ago. But looks to be in fairly good condition since it was kept in a presentation box.

Any help would be appreciated.

60xxx puts manufacturing date somewhere in the mid-to-late 1960's. Originally designed in the mid-1950's, this pistol was made for a long time. Around 1970, S&W improved this model with the Model 39-2, with the main difference between a redesign of the extractor on the right side of the slide.

Apparently... these older extractors had been known to be a bit fragile but many of us (today) believe that NEVER dropping the slide and ejector over an already chambered round is the best way to extend the life of this old style long extractor.

Oh, also, as to value...

You mention a "presentation box", but the value of this pistol on the open market is most enhanced by it's original box. Depending upon condition, with it's original box, I'd expect $800-$1200 assuming this is the typical alloy frame pistol. A small amount of steel frame Model 39's are out there and those are worth significantly more money.

No original box? $600-$800 is typical, maybe a bit more depending on condition and local trends.

All steel. Took a magnet to test. Magnet stays on every part of the gun, except the wood (obviously). Dad wrote a note that said only 927 were made.

Priceless to me, but I can live with $800.

I think I have the original box, brochures, and wax paper. Tested the gun with a magnet. Magnet sticks to every surface of the gun including trigger guard and front and back part of the grips. Does that increase value?

It has more sentimental value than real dollar value for me. Would never sell one of my dad’s guns. $800 value is a good number to write down for future reference. But I’m thinking, it’s worth a lot more than that. Original box + original brochures + presentation box + all steel + 927 made = ????

Any advice would help.

Haha, YES, it absolutely has more sales potential than $800 if it's steel frame. The only thing you are missing is a factory letter, which is a must for a pistol such as this.

These trade in the $2500-$3500 range. They are sought after.

Many would conclude that it's collector value is such that it shouldn't be used as a shooter, but that is your call.

How do I get an “Authentication” letter? Do I need to ship the gun to S&W?
