Default 4506 info

I have a 4506, but don’t know what year it was made it the value of it. I inherited it from my dad who passed a couple years ago. I haven’t shot it yet but read an article that said it’s a monster. It is overbuilt, but I’m hoping it will chew up anything I put into it. Hoping to buy another one since I will eventually be splitting my guns between two kids when I pass. Any help would be appreciated. (No box came with the gun and only one magazine came with it.) Thanks!

I would venture to say that is a fairly early 4506 but you should post a partial serial number to know for sure. As it is early, it may have been affected by the grip recall - make sure there is a dimple on the bottom. If not, S&W owes you a new grip if available.

I'm sure those aftermarket sights (Millett?) are functional but I would return it back to the factory (pre-Novak?) 3 dot fixed setup.

I have the shorter 4566, and yes, built like tanks. The weak point is the trigger play spring, but that does not affect function if it gives out. It makes an annoying click in the trigger in SA.

At one time I had one of the transitional 645-4506 pistols. As for reliability, mine was insanely reliable once I cleaned out all the accumulated gunk in the extractor channel. The S&W Models 645 and 4506 were always known for being reliable feeders, including feeding magazines filled with resized empty cases. I tried that with mine and it surely did feed empties just as well as it fed live rounds, so unless your magazine springs are shot or the recoil spring is weak, you should have no problems.

Oh, and the rear site on yours is not original. It looks like a Bo-Mar to me.

I would call S&W depending on who you get they will either give you month and year or month day and year.

I would guess its a fairly early 4506 as it has a stepped frame.. The rear sights are not standard for the model also.

Question

That appears to be a very early 4506. I'd estimate 1989-90 build date. It would have originally come with the same small rounded 645 style rear sight with two white dots.

Locally, with no box in the very nice condition it is in, it would bring around $650. Nice 45! Hope this helps. Regards 18DAI

The 4506 is one of the most rugged 45 ACP handguns made. It is built tough and will cycle anything factory that you load.
