A couple of 3rd gen scores this weekend
Picked up a 4506-1 at the gunshow this weekend. Been looking for a while, finally found one in the configuration I wanted (Novak sights, round trigger guard). Well used but in good shape, no box, 2 mags. $525, not a steal, but was happy with that price.
Also picked up 2 5903SSV’s I snagged on gun broker. Gave the one in better condition to my dad and kept the other one for myself. $425 with 3 mags and $525 with 2 mags. No original boxes or paperwork.
Can’t wait to shoot them. Also picked up a 3.6” M&P9 2.0 and a really nice Arsenal AK74. Weekend range time can’t come soon enough.

Nice looking pistols. The prices were very reasonable, some would say "dirt cheap". Nice finds!!...and giving your father one of the 5903s...very generous of you.

Interesting. S&W autos don’t bring strong money in my neck of the woods. It one of the reasons I started working on my very humble collection. 3rd gen 9mm’s rarely bring over $450. Revolvers on the other hand, all go for gunbroker prices, even in less than stellar condition. J frames go for $500-$700 at a minimum, anything else is usually $1000 and up.

Nice scores...Good prices especially on the .45
Never was an SSV fan myself...... I never grasped the benefits of the short slide and big long butt!  .......
always wished Smith would have made the reverse ...... a"CCO"model combining a 6906 frame with a 4 inch 59xx upper.
I built a FrankenSmith one with a 6904 frame and a 915 upper ...... great concealed carry gun IMO...... the 4" barrel can easily be carried IWB and the shorter butt prints less..........

One of the biggest factors in my attraction to 3rd Gens is the fantastic bargain that they represent relative to other all-metal handguns.
Pre-IL S&W revolvers, on the other hand, tend to be priced out of my reach... and that is especially true for blued ones in top condition with box. That's just the way it is. 
Back in the good ol' days ('76-'83), stainless steel was 'in", and so most of my old S&W collection is, in fact, stainless steel revolvers. Now, I've refocused on blued revolvers and I'm finding the going is pretty tough for a poor old man on social security.  Regrets, regrets. If only I could have seen the future 35+ years ago.

I definitely get that, but this won’t be a ccw gun for me. I wanted a utility gun to carry at the farm all day without lugging around the weight of my 59. My criteria was a shooter grade 3rd gen, alloy framed, high cap gun, and the smaller the better. This thing fit the bill perfectly and it is also really well balanced, imo. A buddy of mine who does custom knives and leatherwork is going to make me a holster for it.

How much weight will you be saving with 1/2 inch shorter barrel slide? Could be easier to sit on/in a piece of equipment..... keep an eye out for a 6906. unless you have 'big" hands.

I was actually looking for a 6906 when I found this. I didn’t even know the ssv existed until I ran across one on the big auction site. Had to have it.

What RacerX said....... I conceal carry a PC Shorty-9 ( PC 6904) from time to time..... 12+1 plus a spare 5906 15 round mag w/ a +2 adapter....28 rounds
Three extra rounds on top of 6 or 7 is a big improvement ..... IMO not so much for "civilian concealed carry" when you are starting with 12+1

I would plan on being the better shooter and faster one in a Bad Situation then worrying about how many extra rounds I could shoot. It would be a head shot to stop the attacker quickly. If you can"t hit the target within the 1st--3 shots I feel your survival rate will definitely increase a lot.

Really?
That wasn't my point.
I think that two-tone 5903 is a swell pistol and if it had a couple of extra bullets in the mag I could overlook a big butt.

My thought is the gun with a short butt is easier to conceal...... hopefully it's carried every day no matter how you are dressed...... and hopefully never drawn in anger/defense.
If I'm going with a full size frame.... I don't see a lot of advantage in a 1/2 shorter barrel/slide. I carry IWB. The SSVs are neat; but IMO were the answer to a problem that didn't exist...... and production ended in it's second year.
So I opt for a shot butt with 7 (3913) or maybe 12 (6906) rounds.... for most of us if you can't get it done with 12..... 3 more..... well you know what they say........
I'd still buy one at the right price!!!!!!

I agree with every thing you say, especially the part about buying any pistol at the "right price"! And it is a swell pistol, even if one didn't use it to carry I bet it shoots sweet and would get a lot of attention at the range!
