Default Magazine question for S&W 1911

I'm new to the 1911 platform and I've got a Colt government 1911 that I just inherited. This thing is from 1917 and it could be in better shape. Because of how special it is to me, I won't be changing it. But I do occasionally shoot it. But I want another 1911 to shoot, a modern stainless version.

I really don't want to pay the money for the Colt name, when I can get the quality that I want from a lesser priced model. I really like some of the S&W 1911 models that I've seen.

My concern is the interchangeable nature of the magazines. I've got mags for the Colt. I don't want to have to buy separate mags for the S&W. It needs to be a perfect interchange.

With the price of quality mags being what they are. I could easily make up the difference in price on the pistols, if I've got to buy separate new mags. I'd prefer not to do that, and save the money. Besides there's some things that I like on the Smith vs. the Colt. But if the mags don't perfectly adapt from one gun to the other, then this is a deal breaker for me. Since I'm starting from scratch, I'll either go with a Smith, or a Colt. But I don't want 10 identical mags for each. Only distinguished from the other by some arbitrary means, like paint. I want to be able to grab either or both guns, and all ten loaded mags. Then go to the range with zero issues. Any thoughts or experiences on this is appreciated. Since there's a whole lot of info out there, but I can't find specifics. But it seems that there can be slight variations. I'm using Wilson Combat mags btw.

I use Wilson mags also and they work flawlessly in my S&W 1911s, even in one chambered for .38 Super. I can't imagine why the magazines you already have would not work in an S&W.

I highly recommend S&W 1911s, by the way. I have three and will be buying more. I used to own Kimber 1911s but had four sour service experiences with them and disposed of all of those guns, replacing them with S&Ws. By comparison, I thought I had a problem with an S&W PC 1911 (the one with the slotted slide) and sent it back. The gunsmith actually working on it called me to discuss his findings and recommendations. I couldn't get Kimber to even tell me what they did - none of it corrected the problem I was having so I guess that didn't matter...

Good luck and enjoy your buying experience.

Ed

Thanks for the response! This was the news I was hoping for. Tell you the truth, it's what I expected. But I didn't want to be caught by a totally foreseeable equipment problem. I'd love to have another Colt, but my budget won't allow one in the same condition that I'd like. However a S&W would fit right in there. And it's just for targets, and maybe bed side use. Don't really need a gold cup for that. I want an exact 1911 government model. At least as far as the mag fit, and the takedown, including detail strip. Don't know how close I'll get, but it's not a deal breaker. As long as I'm not having to buy separate mags. Any input from those more familiar with the S&W models would be appreciated. What models am I looking for?

The Smith 1911's have an external extractor. Do you really want an exact 1911 or 1911A1? Lots of improvements to the original design have been made over the past century. Little things like guide rods, hammers, trigger blades, sights, grips and even grip screws have been improved. Believe it or not not all 1911's are 45ACP today. Before you spend money be sure you know what you are looking at. The smith 1911's are superb guns, That said if you have your heart set on a mil spec 1911 or 1911A1 your choice will be very limited. Few are being made today by very few builders. bob
