Default CS40/45 and "Shorty 40"

Couple of quick questions on the above -

Are there aftermarket reduced strength mainsprings available for the CS40 and CS45? I have both and can't find anything model specific from Wolf. I don't use either for carry. I'm also looking at a CS9 - does that take the same mainspring?

A LGS just received a bunch of 3rd gen DA Smiths and one is a PC stamped "Shorty 40" with a few mags. I don't know if it's a Mk1, Mk2 or Mk3 version but know there's a difference in qty manufactured with Mk2 at about 200 units. This one carries the rubber Hogues and an LPA adjustable rear sight (which I assume is aftermarket?) Any guidelines on ballpark pricing appreciated. It's in the box new and has a few mags with it

The CS45/40 mainspring is different than the CS9 mainspring, and I do not know of any aftermarket makers of reduced power springs for either.

CS40/45: Smith & Wesson Mainspring S&W CS40C CS40D CS40S CS45C - MPN: 263370000

CS9: Smith & Wesson Mainspring S&W CS9C CS9S - MPN: 263200000

I have both a CS45 and a CS9, and don't find either to have a very heavy DA trigger pull. It could be the large factory Hogue grips on your CS40 that are making the trigger pull seem difficult. When your TercGen CS40 grips arrive this week, hopefully it will make a difference (and if not, do tons of dry-fire practice with your CS40 to build up muscle memory and strength).

I haven't priced the Shorty 40's much, but have seen them sell in the $800-$1100 range on GunBroker.

Thanks Nick. My CSs currently have the KSD wood grips. Handling the Performance Center 40 yesterday spoiled the heck out of me. My LGS has a habit of looking up the original sale price on PC handguns, am hopeful they'll do the same on this one.

Many Shorty 40s such as mine came with LPAs from the factory so that is not an indicator. The grips are aftermarket though and depending on if you have a stainless or blue model will depend on the series, as most models carried their series of production on BB side markings if they have not been worn off from excessive carry.

Since it is in the original factory box, the 6 digit product code will be printed on the end label. That will tell us exactly which firearm it is.

Further, under the heading "SPEC ORDER" is a 4 digit number that represents the day of manufacture of the firearm.

I am a doubter of a "NIB" claim if it has had the grips changed.

Shorty 40s priced in the mid $800 have been sitting on Gun Broker for some time. I would think an offer around $700 should be fair in today'd market

From what I've seen in pictures, the KSD wood grips will still be pretty 'fat' in hand compared to my modified Delrin grips. Yours should arrive this Thursday, hopefully it will make a difference in hand for you. I personally notice a huge difference with the CS40/45 grips, the bulky Hogues make it feel like there's a sock wrapped around the grip or something.

The CS4x mainsprings are shorter than the "GROUP B Pistols - Short" mainsprings listed on Wolff's website. If you wanted to experiment you could purchase an assortment of their "Short" reduced mainsprings & cut off half a turn at a time with a Dremel cut-off wheel until to got the feel you are wanting. (Place the cut-off end in the mainspring's plunger.)

You definitely want to verify reliability after that mod if you plan to carry it for SD!

Also, keep in mind that the mainspring's pressure on the hammer resists the slides initial movement. The more you lighten it the higher the slide speed. I usually go up in recoil spring strength to offset it but that isn't an option unless you do more experimenting.

The Mk.I's don't say Shorty 40 anywhere on them. Mine now has a LPA adjustable sight on it.

You can feel the quality in the early PC guns just by racking the slide. Nice!

A bit off topic but does anyone know of a source for a CS45 stainless slide stop/release lever? Mine was evidently used with too many hot loads and is pretty well scarred up. Seems there might be mainsprings around but I should stock a couple extra, any source for these too?
