Default Question on Model 41

I have a Model 41 with SN: 41,XXX (no prefix) which I think dates it to mid 1960's. The question is in regards to the barrel length - it currently has a 7" long barrel with muzzle break/compentator, it is my understanding that the 7" barrel length did not come out until 1978? Any information would be appreciated.

The 7 3/8" barrel was indeed discontinued in 1978, replaced by the 7" version. At the same time, the cocking indicator pin was deleted from the gun. Does yours have the cocking indicator? If it does not, it was made in 1978 or later.

Good Life - if you pull the screw below the bbl, the brake will come off and you will see a 3/8" nub that makes the bbl 7 3/8". The later 7" bbl lacks the 3/8" nub. As Paladin notes the brake was dropped in 1978 in the A465000 SN range. As S&W does not waste anything, there is no exact cutoff for the 7 3/8" bbl.

With the serial No. on it you are probably correct around 1959-1960 production on this M41. The dark colored grips give it away a bit as well as the dark Blue finish on it also.
