Default Performance Center Shorty Forty

I just picked up a LNIB "Shorty Forty" with half dozen magazines - I now get to do the "CA wait" despite this being about the 150th gun I own .....

I know little to nothing about the gun, which version it may be, other than it's a PC version and has a terrific DA pull. By far the best I've felt on any SA/DA Smith. The serial # is "SPC01XX". I didn't find quantity manufactured or value in either the SCSW or Blue Book.

Aside from value, I'd like to replace those lousy Hogue grips but don't know which model to specify or what interchanges. Delrin would be my 1st choice - do I also need the longer grip retention pin?Regarding magazines, I have more than enough but they're 8 rounders. Are there any greater capacity with spacers available?

Any info appreciated. The price seemed OK (by CA standards - $600.00) and any "off roster" Smith in CA is worth snagging.

The price is more than OK by most of the standards I know of. For what you got, you probably would have spent $800 or more on one of the big sites. Congratulations on a fine pick-up!

There is a lot of information on this Forum about the Shorty 40. You'll find that it was the first semi-auto produced in the Performance Center, and that the fit and finish are like a custom gun since these were hand made. Rack the slide once and I guarantee it'll bring a smile to your face.

Yours with the SPC prefix is one of about 220 in the "Mark 2" production (not marked on the gun) that following approximately 1500 guns in three production runs of the first version beginning with PCS prefixes.

Others can chime in on the grips question, though I confess that I hadn't heard of Hogues being installed from the factory; Delrin was the usual material, but I suppose anything could have been custom ordered.

You'll enjoy this pistol and it will get its share of range time along with the other 150.

Yes the shorty 40 is about the shooting smith around. You will love it forever as they tend to not come up for sale that often. I have not noticed the grips being an issue lots of custom options out there though so you should be able to find something

Enjoy that shorty 40

It's a double stack. I'm hoping that 4046 magazines will work, ordered a few 11 rounders off CDNN - they're on sale for $18.99, used factory types.

I'd be happy to go with the factory Delrin grips, probably are available at Numrich, but I'm not sure which model to use. Other than it being double stack I don't know what other model I should use as reference.

Thanks for the info, I've done a bit of looking around here. My serial number, assuming Smith didn't do anything unusual, is under 220 (by about 30) so I guess I got lucky on the lower production version. I have a few other DA Smiths to include the CS45 & CS40, older 39 and while they're good guns this thing is head and shoulders above them on DA and SA trigger pull - especially DA, it's the best I've ever handled. Having the decocker snap back into position is a neat touch too.

Congrats on your new Shorty Forty! I'm no expert on the model, but if yours uses the 9-round compact, double-stack magazines, then the factory grips you want are for the 6906 (Smith & Wesson Factory Grips Curved S&W 4013TSW - MPN: 203550000). It will also use a full-size 5906 grip pin, which you may or may not already have with your Hogue rubber grips (Smith & Wesson Factory Grips Pin S&W 4003TSW 4006TSW - MPN: 106500000).

The larger 11-round 4006 magazines will work with your gun, and I have seen spacers for sale on eBay in the recent past. I personally don't use the spacers and have never had a problem with longer mags sticking out of the bottom of a handgun.

Thanks for the info. If they're like the Hogue grips for the CS45 then they use screws. Already ordered the grip pin and I suppose I'll need that little plastic housing too. Any way to use a straight grip on this?

If I got the right frame .... then any 690x grip should work..........in 9mm they are 12 round mags... in .40 either 9 or 10..... the longer 59xx mags need/are better with the +2 spacers.

The Hogue grips use screws to secure the panels, but a grip pin to secure the mainspring adapter to the frame. The rubber panels leave room to use the pin you would need for the Delrin grips, but you will have to look and see for yourself if that's the case. I've even come across used 3rd Gens with the Hogue grips that don't have a grip pin because the last owner took it out before selling, so anything's possible.

There is no straight grip available for the compact double-stacks like the 6906. If you want a straight grip, you will have to file/sand off the hump on the back of your Delrin 69xx grip, which may not look awesome on your PC Shorty Forty, but will likely feel better in hand. Attached is a photo of my 6904 that I did this to, and I put a section of grip or traction tape on the back (as I do for all of my guns).

The Hoge mainspring housing pin is sufficiently long enough to secure the Delrin grips. The gun came with a half dozen 9 round mags, each with finger grip extension. Is there a flat based mag base for this gun?

The factory grip (mainspring) pin is what you use for both grips, S&W and Hogue. Hogue does not supply it's own version of the pin to replace the factory one.

All (my) compact 40's have the curved finger grip extension (butt plate). I've not seen a flat one for them.

However, the flat mag butt plate from a 4006 will work, since they're both double stacks.

I swapped my 4006's butt plate with my 4013TSW'S/Shorty 40 curved one & it works. Makes the grip too short for my hand but you might like it.

Thanks. I have some 4006 mags and the base plates interchange. I'll switch out a few, don't mind having my hand scrunched a bit. My favorite long term carry is still a late 70's Detonics - that's a tight fit.

The Shorty 40 will use the same grips as the 4013TSW and 6904/6.

I recommend using a magazine adapter/sleeve or get some +2 baseplates for the factory mags (also the same as 690x/400x). A lesson learned from mag mashing between big and small Walthers and Springfield Armory XDMs... a forceful insertion without a positive stop can damage the ejector. Also provides a pinkie-rest without the telltale (if you CC) shirt-poking curve.

The 6906 grips snapped on and fit fine. For some reason those "11 round" magazines will accommodate only 10 rounds no matter how much I push & press. Since the flush fit magazines accept 9 rounds I'll stick with those. Most have the finger rest extension, although one has a flat floor-plate that I've fitted to not stick out beyond the front grip.

I usually carry a Sig 938 or Smith alloy J frame. Last weekend I carried the 40, under a T shirt only, and it was easy to conceal, light to carry. Kind of surprised me as the little Sig and Smith have kind of spoiled me.
