Default What do You Use for Lubing Your Slide, Gen 3

Just purchased the 3913 and have never cleaned a semi with SS slide and alloy frame. I thought I'd ask the people who actually have one to pass down their knowledge of what works the best for yours (mine has signs of wear) (shiny friction marks on the alloy frame where the slide rides on it). Want to make it last as long as possible. What lube, oil & solvents have worked out the best for you?
I know it's a newbee type question but I've been waiting to find one of these for a long time and want to take the proper care of it.

There will be a host of responses to this question that endorse one practice or product over another. I like to use Hoppe #9, Rem oil, and a silicone rag to finish on the outside surface. I keep Hoppe #9 away from the outside SS finish surfaces and use Rem oil which acts as a solvent too. After cleaning, I store my firearms in a silicone treated sock in a gun safe with a Golden Rod to remove humidity.

There are plenty of online videos and experts (in their opinion) with advice. I found this article that you may find helpful: https://www.gunsamerica.com/blog/how...-your-handgun/

I have carried/shot 5900s and 6900s since 1992.

Clean: WD40...buy by the gallon and use in a pump spray bottle.

Degrease: Any good gunblast...I use Shooters Choice.

Slide rails and barrel: Shooters Choice grease that comes in the syringe... After lightly lubed, lightly spray the inside and outside with G96 Silicone Spray...

I use Hoppe’s #9 (the old formula-stocked up on it years ago when there was talk of changing it due to EPA regs...) on a Bore Snake for the barrel.

I use whichever spray blaster I have on hand & a toothbrush for the frame & slide.

I’m a big believer in synthetic lubricants; I especially like Tetra-Grease and Shooter’s Choice.

Exactly what I do. WD40 is a water displacing formulation designed to clean fishing reels after fishing in the ocean. In a pinch, I'll use it to lube a noisy door hinge, but 3 days later it evaporates, & the hinge squeaks again. GARY

I plan on shooting the pistol at least 3 - 4 times a month. More at first. I'm guessing you just do a wipe down on the outside before you take it to the range? Wondering what effect the silicone has on handling the firearm? Slippery? I was mainly a revolver guy years ago. Thanks for your method.

This.

Though my old-stock Breakfree CLP gets used, too. But grease like Tetra on the slide rails before reassembly.

Mostly I clean with Hoppes. For most of my semi-autos I use Tetra gun grease on the rails. For the few all stainless autos I own I use a product by RIG made just for that purpose.

With a 669, two 3913's, a 908 & 908S, I also use Hoppes and have used it for years, inside & out! Once the gun is all cleaned up & before I put it away, I'll give it a good wipe down with a silicone saturated cloth.

While I don't expect everyone to spend the time cleaning their guns the way I do, I'll spend hours on just one gun. It's a form of therapy for me as I truly enjoy cleaning my guns!

If you spend the time & effort to clean your guns right, they will give you years of great performance and beauty!

I use Slide Guide by Brian Enos and it comes in different weights for adjusting from cold to hot weather.

On my 3914 I use Hoppes #9 and a toothbrush, blowing it all out with compressed air, then usually RemOil for most moving parts, and Lubriplate grease (very lightly) on the slide and rails.

I used to be a Hoppes guy, but the last few years have switched to Mil-Comm products - TW25b grease for my alloy-framed guns, with their MC2500 oil or MC3000 semi-fluid for the few areas I don't use grease on (like the slide stop pin).

A little bit of the TW25b goes a long way, sticks to the aluminum, and lasts for a long time. Frame & Slide rails, outside of barrel, inside of slide, guide rod, and the frame lugs that interface with the barrel lugs all get a light coat of grease (a few drops total spread thin so no white buildup is present, but all surfaces wet). Be sure to use their MC25 cleaner to remove all the old grease during cleaning, or some will get left behind and you will wind up over-lubricating your gun.

Mil-Comm TW25B synthetic weapons grease... Son-in-law told me about it, it's what was issued to him in his deployments to Iraq.

I discovered that a little goes a long way... I bought a 4 oz. tube, it's going to end up outlasting me.

Probably close to Tetra grease... I suspect like gasoline brands, the formulation of synthetic grease base is all the same, to only thing that distinguishes one from another is the proprietary additives/formulation, and in the end, one works as well as the other.

Spend all you want on name brand products that are marketed as gun products. They all work.

So does Marvel Mystery Oil, sold by the large bottle at any auto parts store. Costs maybe $5.00. A bottle will last years. It works as well for me as the expensive stuff. A light coat of MMO on the slide rails keeps mine functioning properly. bob

ps: I'm a believer in using oil, not grease on the slide/frame junctions.

Ballistol for cleaning and lubing all parts and a bit of Lubriplate on the rails. As for the oil not grease approach for rails I would not use grease if I expected a dirty environment or not cleaning regularly due to the grease holding onto the dirt and dust. But for range use and regular cleaning I like a bit of Lubriplate on the rails for potentially reducing wear and extending the life of the firearm. May just be me but you asked so....

Been using Froglube on my 6906 and it has performed well. But then, so has everything else. The only thing I ever used that I would call unsatisfactory is WD-40. Never again.

Some products may require more servicing than others, but with routine cleaning and lubing they are all pretty equal.

As others have said, I use TW25b grease on all of my semi-autos. Wherever there is metal to metal contact of moving parts, i.e., slide rails, barrel bushing, barrel, etc., it gets a wipe of TW25b. I apply it to a cotton swab and put a thin coat down.
For general cleaning, I use Break-Free CLP.

I clean with Hoppe's Number 9 solvent, it's good at dissolving powder residue and, given sufficient time, will remove at least some of the copper fouling from the bore.

For corrosion protection and lubrication of rotating parts, I use Corrosion X.

For slide rails and the barrel where it contacts the barrel bushing and the cam blocks in the receiver, I use white lithium grease. I bought a tube of this grease from an auto parts store in 1987 when I needed it for a performance engine I was building. I'm still using that same tube of grease. I'll probably have to buy another tube in another 10 years or so, but one tube every 40 years or so is pretty darned economical.

I like to use RIG for stainless on my pistols and revolvers.(especially those that have aluminum frames and or guns that have different grades of steel that touch each other as it will help prevent galling) But the truth is almost any good lube will work if used correctly. Certainly any of the produces the other posters have mentioned will provide good service. The key to the whole thing is: use some! Regular care will keep you shooter working for years. And like most of the other products, a small tube or tub(comes both ways) will last many years.

Since I hesitate to assume I know more about their guns than S&W does, I use exactly what they say I should -- a drop here and there of a good, light oil.

If I remember correctly , it seems that S&W recommends just a light coat of oil on the rails of their M&P series semi auto's . Regards, Paul

For many years, I've used old formula Breakfree CLP.
I've found Tri Flo to be the same thing as old formula Breakfree, so I now use it, since I ran out of old Breakfree.

This applies to my one (1) 2nd Gen and twenty (20) 3rd Gen pistols.
  1. For cleaning the bore, Hoppe No. 9 solvent
  2. For small internal parts, I use Prolix Extra-T Dry Lube (Photo #1)
  3. For the rails, Rig +P Stainless Steel Lube (grease) (Photo #2)
