59/459 arched mainspring housing/ backstrap insert
I can't believe these are so hard to find.
Plus... plastic?
Someone should tool up and make one.

I have big mits and the Model 59 has always been a handful...almost like holding a 2x4.
Apparently am not alone in that the attraction to adding more palm swell is not exactly enticing.

The arched housing doesn't add anything to the width of the pistol, and only adds length to the grip where it follows the thenar eminence.
This, effectively, raises the muzzle and corrects the tendency to point in the dirt.

I bought one from a forum member here and it does make a world of difference in the grip feel.
The curved backstrap which came in S&W packaging is plastic and discolored (age), and looks like it would not be a problem for a machine shop to produce in steel or aluminum.

The arched 59/459 backstrap makes a big difference. Gives it almost a SIG 226 feel. I carried this one on duty for several years.

The arched backstrap creates a shape similar to that of the arched grips on the 59xx, but appears to make the gripping area little longer front to back than on the 59xx.

Did you carry it... on a SWAT team?

Yes.
When I first started carrying that 459 the dept issued was the 439. Those of us on SWAT were allowed to carry a 459 but we had to buy our own. I picked this one up and had our range guys go thru it and slick it up a bit. Then I put the arched backstrap on it. Felt much better with the arched.

I bought one fairly recently in an alloy or aluminum. Let me see if I can find out where and I will post back here.

I never knew they even made such a thing for a 59. That would be great. I always preferred the Model 39-style, curved backstrap shape to the flat, 1911-style. On my 3rd gens I always trade out the flat Delrins for the curved.

I dont have a 59, but always assumed that they were interchangable from 39 to 59. Not so?

39 was single stack, 59 double stack. 59 grip is much wider. Plus, the frame on the 39 was curved. It's straight on the 59, hence the insert.

That is an elusive part these days. A few years ago, I found a seller on Ebay that had several and bought one but I've never found a 1st or 2nd gen double stack I couldn't live without so I passed it on.

I prefer arched. If I remember correctly, the 909 came with an arched mainspring housing. It's one reason I'd prefer a 909 as opposed to the 908 or 910.
