Bobbed hammer replacements for 3rd Gen compacta
Have a couple of 4014’s and 3913’s and would like to replace the hammers on at least one each with exposed hammers.
Anybody have any experience with this and can you recommend the best source and part number?
For the holsters I use (mostly TT Gunleather IWB’s) I really don’t see any advantage to a bobbed hammer. My wife especially wants to be able to thumb back the hammer sometimes on a 3913 LS I just bought her.
Thanks!

You're in luck.
All of the third gen DA/SA hammers interchange.
The second gen hammers will work also but have a half-cock notch.

I have a spurred hammer with the half-cock notch. I've heard it can be filed off and made to work in 3rd gens. Anyone here ever done that?

the gunsmith I use put a regular exposed hammer on a 669 I own. Don't know which one he used but it works just fine.

I have done this on all my 3rd Gen guns. Much better now. I also put a 3rd Gen hammer on a 469. Lost half cock, but who cares. These guns should have been offered both ways in the day. GARY

No, I don't think they do. I swapped out my bobbed hammer on my 1066 for a spurred hammer and had to send the original hammer (a 10xx series with a spur) back and get a different one without the half cock notch (I believe that was it, it's been a few years, but it wouldn't function properly) to fit and cock correctly. fwiw

In my case, since the donor hammers were from full sized guns, the smith had to swap the rod that attached from the original hammer to the new hammer. That's what needs to be done. GARY

I've added and subtracted hammers from various 3G guns. Get a good gunsmithing hammer, the right sized punch set and a punch block (or whatever they're called), watch the couple of videos here about disassembly/reassembly of frames, and it's pretty straightforward.

I bought a spur-less hammer on Ebay. I installed it in a 3904, it worked great. In dry firing one day I noticed how smooth that trigger was compared to most of my other 3rd generations (8 of them). I vaguely remembered thinking it had a different shape when I installed it. I pulled the pistol back apart. I figured out it was a 2cd generation that had the half cock notch ground off. I have left it installed. That pistol works fine. If there is some potential problem with that, I would love to hear it.
