I have a weird idea. 3914 slide on Model 39 frame.
Is it possible? I've heard that early Gen3 slides will fit on Gen2 frames, which are the same dimensions as Gen1 frames.
So theoretically, if I had an early Gen3 slide (one of the ones where "SMITH & WESSON" was on the end of the slide in front of the "MADE IN USA (etc)" markings...
It should fit, and function fine, right?
My S&W 39 is coming soon, and I already have a spare 3914 slide assembly. If possible, can somebody try it and see if it works?
(I know to remove the firing pin safety for Gen1 compatibility.)

It's not a weird idea at all. I have several favorite Frankensmith pistols.
Sadly, the combination you are describing typically does not work. I have tried all manner of combinations, and routinely carry and shoot a few of them. The ones that consistently work and shoot well are 3rd gen to 3rd gen same caliber (I have a 915 slide on a 6906 frame and a 4566 slide on a 4516 frame).
2nd gen to 2nd gen same caliber SOMETIMES works (about 2 for 6 in my attempts, but others have had more luck).
The 2nd gen to 1st gen does NOT work, in my experience. I have tried a 439 and 639 slide on 39-2 frame. No joy. Also 39-2 slide on 439 or 639, also no-go.
3rd gen to 1st gen also no joy in my experience. 39-2 slide on 3913 did not work, nor did 3913 slide on 39-2. (I have multiples of each and no combination of any of them worked for me)
I assume your 3914 slide will work with 3rd-gen pistols, and I have done the 5906 with 3913 slide, 6906 with 5906 slide, the aforementioned 45xx ones (many have done this and we had a thread going a while back about it), and 645 with 4566 slide strangely worked great but looked super weird to me.
If you are trying to find a home for your 3914 slide let me know.
Best,
Steve

I have built FrankinSmith's using a 915 and a 59xx slides that will work fine on either 6906 or or 6904 frames. My extra 59xx upper will also work on a 915 frame.
So I've followed every Frankengun thread I've come across over the years.................
Like Squidsix I have not heard of a mixed Generation Frankengun.

I'll have to try it again to make sure I remember right, but a few years back I mixed (I think) a 910 and a 469. Ended up with a 910SSV, and the most nose-heavy 469 you'd ever want to try and get on target. I seem to remember one of them cycled fine but the other had issues, and I don't remember now which was which. I do know I put them back the way they came from S&W. Oh well, now you've given me a little something to do over the weekend.
Edit: Decided I had time just now to try it again. The 469 slide went on the 910 great - seems to work fine. However, the reverse was not true. The 910 slide wouldn't go on the 469. Oh well.

I've been banking a 3904 slide to experiment on a 39-2 or 559 (with a fixed front sight) ... just because of the dove tail sights on the 3904.
I did a 39-2 with Miillet sights, just two. They were a P.I.T.A. (and I still have the tools). Had to mill off the front sight, pin and stake the front target sight, then the rear was just a 90 degree turn out the old one and in with the Millet rear target sight. On one, I got away without refinishing a blue slide, but the nickel needed to be refinished when done, with the sight staked in after the refinish.
I really love the old Millets white outline rear and red, slight T shaped exclamation point type front.
I still have a 39-2 Millet set up. Fully loaded slide (all the internal components) with the matched (to the slide) barrel, just in case someone needs.;
My eyes just take so well to the Millet rear sing and front orange sight. The white outline rear is like the horizon gauge on a plane, so easy to pick up and take and exact bead on the target.
I get them all in the same area with 3 dot sights but I just don't like 3 dots. I can pull a nice tight group with the WOL rear and red front, instead of "Just in there somewhere close".
I haven't had time to play with it yet. Will the 3904 slide work on the 539, 639, 459 559, 659 or 39-2s ?

Did you remove the firing pin safeties when you put those on the 39-2 frame?

You know I don't remember. I remove the magazine disconnect on all my guns, but I can't recall if I pulled the firing pin safety on any of them during this. I will say that in the case of the 639 slide on the 6906 frame, I couldn't even get the slide on the rails, so it was moot. Also, the 39-2 slide on the 3913 frame, same thing: didn't fit on the fame at all.

Ah, that makes sense. Much clearer, thanks.
And yes, I intend to rip the mag safety out.
A Model 59 slide should just drop right on in, so I could make a 39-2, right?

Yes i have done the 39-2 (59) slide on a 39 no dash and it worked just fine. There is a vendor someplace making 39 extractors so that is less of an issue now, but I feel better with the new design.
