Default 1911 PD throws brass every which way

I purchased a used 1911 PD at my LGS. The gun was made in 2007. It is a Commander-like model. After a detail strip and thorough cleaning, it functions flawlessly. However, it throws brass in front of, to my right, and behind me (over my head). It does this with factory ammo and reloads. The last time I shot it I was glad I was wearing safety glasses because a case hit the right lens.

Is this normal for this gun? Is something out of tune? None of my other semis (including other Smiths) are so erratic in ejecting brass.

Thanks for any info.

Two issues may be involved here.

Variations in your grip (including pressure) can create variations in ejection. The inconsistency in your ejection suggests this may be a factor. Uniformity in grip is important here.

On a traditional 1911, with John Browning’s extractor, a bit of work on the extractor may be in order. Smith’s external extractor can introduce factors not encountered on the Browning design, but may also be part of the problem.

Have an accomplished 1911 shooter try your gun. That may help you distinguish which of these issues is responsible for your problem.

My Gunsite edition 1911 PD was acting the same way. I found that a machining operation was not completed on my slide.

Prime suspect is the ejector. Read up on 1911 ejector tuning. The ejection behavior you're seeing is typical of a poorly tuned, broken or un-tuned ejector.

Tuning is by trial and error... with an extended ejector installed, the end is carefully filed with an angle to direct the spent brass in the desired direction, usually four o'clock. File a little then test fire, rinse & repeat until it's consistently launching brass right where you want.

Cheers
Bill
