Default Pawn shop pick up: S&W 4506-1

Saw this earlier today and since I don't own any 3rd Gen autos, I figured, why not? $435 OTD. I don't know if that's a particularly good price, but seemed ok after doing a quick Gunbroker search while standing in the shop. Took a couple quick pics in the parking lot, which now that I look at them are a bit skewed from the angle I took them, but you get the idea. Gun looks to be about 95% or better.

Anyone know a good source of mags? Are the ProMags for this particular gun any good?

I see nothing wrong with the pics or the pistol in them, and you definitely paid under market for a 4506, so great buy.

Hell no, stay away from Pro Mag unless part of your training regimen is failure drills. Pro Mag is junk and should be stricken from the record. I'd love to point you to the best source for S&W magazines but I've had my supply for so long that I've not needed to shop.

Very nice indeed! An excellent score! Congratulations!

No experience with the 8-round ProMags here, but some extended 10-round Pro-mags came with my Model 4506 (no dash) and they work okay. Still, the near-universal preference is for S&W OEM mags. They are discontinued for a while now, but used or NOS ones pop up available here and there (often at shows)... so keep an eye out.

I had my 4506 at the range today.

Congratulations!

There nothing better!

You're going to like it! My guess is it will be the softest shooting 45 you ever handled. Great guns.

Just curious, does Mec Gar make 3rd gen .45 mags? People seem to like them, at least in their 9mm offerings.

See what Gun Mag Warehouse has for your gun. Ditto the opinions on ProMag. I'm a slow learner and have a small pile of their junk.

Mags for this model are out there and not expensive. Heck, post a WTB here along with your story and I promise you will be offered mags quickly and at a reasonable price.

A 4506-1 with the adjustable rear sight for $435? I'd say you did quite well given today's market.

Pro Mag magazines? You might get lucky, but I think it is more likely that you would be using them to practice clearing jams.

I decided to call around to several LGS to see if they maybe had some stragglers on the shelf since these have only been out of production for about a year. Didn't find any NIB, but one shop had a box of used mags for various models, and in there were two of the 645/4506 mags in nice condition (steel base plate, orange followers), so I picked those up. Both should be more than serviceable, but just from repeatedly racking the slide I consistently get a couple of failures to lock back. I'm thinking new springs, but being the older metal base plate models, I'm not sure where I can get those. I took the mag that came with the gun (plastic base pad, yellow follower) and tried the spring and base pad on the orange follower/steel baseplate mag body (using the orange follower) and while it all fit together, the mag wouldn't lock into the gun. something in the design of the newer mag body, I'm assuming, is just off enough to keep the follower from engaging the slide stop. If it had worked, I'd have ordered new springs and plastic base pads.

Just replace the mag springs. Look around, they are out there, the followers too. Makes em good as new. Thats what I did for my 4576 I carry on duty. If you cant find any new springs, let me know. You can have some of mine.

Too late I bought those those from Summit last week. They were not in the best shape, they need new base pads and possibly new springs. I was glad to find them anyway.

No, not yet. Just too much going on at the moment. I picked up some curved back grips to put on it and they've been sitting around for days 'cause I keep getting sidetracked. But it's on my short list.

Last night I tried the curved grips on the 4506. Too pokey in the palm, so I put the straight grips back on and realized those were the better of the two for me.
