Default Chance To P/U a 669. Thoughts?

First off, I'm in So Cal and am not able to get anything off the usual auction sites so my "pickings are slim". I've come across a 669 that appears to be in nice shape and was wondering what the value would be. He's asking $550 which I feel is high. I recently purchased a 3913 in 80-85% condition for $400 and felt it was a fair deal. The difference I can see between the 669 & 3913 is the 669 is double stack about 3/4" longer. I'm looking to start collecting the S&W autos as I like them being all metal (and really think they look fantastic also). All my new purchases will be used as range guns or CCW. What are your thoughts?

considering your situation in cali and the fact that 669s haven't been made in many years i suppose that although high $550 might be the best you can do if the guy is firm on the price. actually i don't think the price is high unless it shows lots of wear or use.
if you're willing to bide your time a cheaper one may turn up in the future but when?
My take is if you want it, buy it.
the extra capacity of the 669 is nice but for carry i'd prefer the thinner 3913.

My thought was that I'd rather spend that extra money on a 3rd Gen 45 if I'm going with a fatter grip. If I'm not going to carry it, I might as well go with a 45. With that being said, I'm thinking $400 to $450 tops for the 669? Any more and I think I'd wait for a 45 cal. Love the 3rd gen look.

Seems a bit high but I'm in FL so I wouldn't know about Cal. prices. I've had mine since new, when they first came out. Mine has had a lot of ammo through it over the years and it has led a hard life, serving as a back-up, an off duty carry and even as a duty gun while on the marine unit where it was soaked through and through with salt water repeatedly.

It shows that hard life cosmetically. However, despite that hard life it has been extremely reliable and surprisingly accurate. I think it's an easy carry on or off duty. Off duty I usually carried AIWB but admittedly usually what some refer to as Mexican style, as I usually just stuck it in my belt. It stays there well but I guess you really should use a holster.

So I gave my opinion as one who would actually use it as a working gun. I have no idea if it would be a good gun for a starting collector. For the price you listed I'd think you could get a better new gun for a working gun. However, I still like mine and it still gets tossed in the door pocket of my truck where it can get a few more nicks and dings. I know it'll go bang if I pull the trigger. I confess to some emotional attachment to the old beater.
