Default IPSC 745 Stainless Magnaported Piece

I have owned this pistol since early 90's. All of the 745's I have seen are two tone. This one has a stainless frame and a stainless slide. When I bought it, it had Pachmayr grips on it.

Is this an anomaly with the slide or perhaps a custom order from S&W??? It has a polished grip and finger guard.

Any info you could supply to say this is a factory original would be helpful.

Jim
Welcome to the Forum

I would highly doubt that is a factory original firearm.

If I am reading it correctly, the serial number is in the correct range for a 745 IPSC, product code 103712 as pictured below

There were 9 or 10 product codes associated with the Model 745, but none of them with a stainless slide

You have owned it long enough to rule out it being a carbon steel slide that is in the white.

The color looks too close for it to be a hard chromed slide.

Have you contacted the Factory to see what they say about the slide?

Default IPSC .45

Thank you for your response. I have not contacted the factory and do not know who to call??

The serial # is DVC3583 which when comparing with the blue slide versions seems to be about right.

Did they ever magna-port and of these from the factory?

The blued versions have gold inlay in the logo IPSC whereas this does not???

I have posted here, a letter from Roy about a "weird" 745 that I had got. My computer is down, (no pictures,) so I can't repost it, but you can find it. The letter list all of the 745 variations, and numbers. As they say, never say never when talking about S&W's, but although it doesn't appear to be factory original, it is still very cool.
Did you put the green insert in the front sight?

The rounded off triggerguard and Magnaporting are highly unlikely to be factory.

I did. It's green florescent paint.

Do you have the URL on the variations of the 745 or any idea where I can see that??

Thanks for responding.

Good catch, the product code 103714 would be correct for the 745 IPSC as pictured above.

103712 is the factory engraved version of the 745

There are 8 or 9 total product codes for the 745 family of auto loaders in all the different configurations

I received a copy from another gentleman and on the S&W box the Product Code for this piece was shown to be 103715. Did they have more than one product code for this???

Jim,
The firearm in your photographs does not have a stainless slide.

It has been hard chrome plated after it left the factory.

There are several little telltale signs that it is not a original stainless slide

The most obvious are the extractor, slide stop and the hammer block

On your firearm they appear to be made from the same metal as the slide.

Even if the factory produced a single stainless slide, they never would have tooled up to produce a single stainless extractor, stainless slide stop and stainless hammer block. They simply would have used the existing blue steel parts that were already in inventory.

It is hard to tell from your photographs, but it looks like the barrel bushing has also been plated in the same finish

Whoever plated the slide also plated the small parts in the same finish, this is a common mistake with aftermarket refinishing companies.

The Model 745 and all of it's 9 product codes are well documented in the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson which is currently in it's fourth edition

Call the Factory. Give them your serial number, they will tell you the product code

Talking

Yes, it’s true that the 4th Ed has the most info on the 745, but I was too late to contribute more. Hopefully my info, (Earl @ Lew Horton & our own Roy Jinks “letters” will make it into the 5th Ed..
I’ve shared my finds here, ya just have to look.

Jim
