Default 39-2, What would You Pay? See Pics

Looking at a 39-2 for sale and wanted to know what would be a decent price for it. (they're asking $500 for it with 2 mags) Not a safe queen so I'm thinking that it's going to have to be a range toy. With that being said, what would you say it's worth? Also, would it be a mistake to make it a range toy? Collectable in it's current condition? Let me know your thoughts.

See post #24 for new price and thoughts.

Looks like the previous owner has spent some time on it as well. The whiteout in the stamped print takes time which makes the appearance look better. It is a excellent carry weapon.

I was wondering how the lettering looked so nice even though the rest of the pistol showed wear. I guess I have a lot to learn.

Looks like a fairly decent condition shooter. California price for a decent Model 39-2 shooter is something I can't really comment on not living there. I would not call that gun an investment-grade collectible or a safe queen... just a really decent shooter-grade "have-fun-with-it" piece.

Outside CA, Model 39-2 prices seem to continue to rise. Some of the prices I've seen lately shock me. But I did very well on mine and maybe that has my perspective a little tainted.

In PA, I see them for $400. The ones in excellent condition seem to move at that price (but not the lesser condition ones). The 'California consideration' throws in a wild card with respect to price estimates.

That's a $400 pistol in these parts, but in Cali you will pay more.

What about a high condition 39-2 in nickel?

Have a friend that has one.

A little high, but with the popularity and attention given the 39 series
lately here on the Forum, the price is not surprising.
Just check the mag follower and base plate.

Here in Maine it would go for $475. I would own that very pistol if it went for sale around here under $450.

White out? I rub some white blackboard chalk over the letters before taking the photos. Easy on, easier off.

I am in California and that price would be considered fair. In this state, adding $200.00 to the national going rate is not uncommon.

I'd think paying 500 in southern california would be the equivalent of paying 400 back here in Illinois, and I wouldn't hesitate to drop 400 for a really good 39-2 such as that appears to be. I payed 400 for a 39 with waaay more finish wear to the frame just because it was an Illinois State Police marked gun. The 39/39-2's are just such nice , classy, historic guns they deserve a bit more consideration when weighing the price, vs all the tactical tupperware out on the market these days. A local shop has a gorgeous nickel 39-2 in the box with two mags and paperwork for 677.95 that I would have already jumped on, but for the fact that I'm played out from having just bought a nice Highway Patrolman a couple weeks ago. In short, buy it. You won't regret it.

He had the ad for a month. I think it might be the one that originally he asked $650 for. I was looking at it again earlier this morning. edit I'm not interested, I used to have a 39 long ago.

While this might be true, I was fortunate enough to purchase a 3913 in 85 to 90% condition with 1 magazine for $400 a few months ago. The dealer acquired it at a good price and reciprocated when selling it to me.
While the 39-2 is a historic piece, I don't think it will conceal as well as my 3913 so it would be used for range time.
That being said, I'm wondering if I should hold out for one in a more "collectable" condition? I've seen a few 39's recently offered for sale with pricing between $500-$700 range.

Good to hear of the going price. Here in Ma. have not seen a 39 in a dog's age at the local LGS I usually haunt. Hopefully will see one and am anxious to see the asking price if on consignment. Guarantee it will be higher than $400.

Im telling you guys, with all the activity on the Forum about the 39 series,
if you want one and the price is within the realm of reality, buy it!
Especially nickel and goodies. The 59 is next, just like HPs and
short 27s. Just hind sight.

I was very fortunate. I got the gun and three original mags for $410 out the door. It is in 90% condition.

I have always liked the 39's and related offshoots. Price seems fair to me in MI. Be mindful that the pristine examples are more sought after, but most of us hate to put those to serious use. Good choice if you are going really use it.

Serious use. I like that phrase. Either shoot the poop out of it, carry,
or put it on the seat of the truck. Use it as a house gun or stuff it in the safe. I get a real giggle out of the last one. Just buy it and enjoy it.

Default If all else fails raise your price!!

Well either this guy has been visiting the S&W boards or is trying a new tactic. After having it listed @ $500 for over a month with no takers, he re-lists it for $600. Still not sold yet. Maybe he had to many low ball offers and figured that by raising the price he would be able to make a buyer happy by coming down in price(but not really)? Thought it was border line at $500 and definitely not going anywhere at $600.

On a side note for you purists, there's a mdl 39 no dash listed NIB with everything included for north of $1500. Looks pretty but thinking this safe queen is a little pricey. Can post pics of it if anyone is curious.

Hello vega, good snag any day all day. Got two of them like yours, one in the shop and one in the truck. Dont worry with all this attention the 39s will take off just like every thing else.
