I just purchased a nice 39-2. I was told it had belonged to an Illinois State Trooper. There are no markings to indicate that.
Does anyone know which serial numbers were shipped to the ISP?
The 39-2 were not marked by the ISP. The 39 no dash were marked ILL.S.P. and an inventory number.
I've never seen a list of 39-2 that were shipped to the ISP. They were shipped over several years so they weren't consecutive serial numbers. The ISP no longer has those records. Maybe try S&W.
I don't remember the make of the issued flap holster. Mine is around here somewhere but can't find it. May have pitched it. It was clorino and had cracked all over. That was a problem with those holsters after they got older. There was a mag pouch sewed to the top/back of the flap that held the mag horizonally. In about 1977 we went to the strong side holster with thumb snap. Mine was Safariland but I don't know if that was only issue.
You are right. I remember those clarino holsters. Any of them would be cracked by now.
I dug up my old copy of Guns and Ammo magazine dated May 1970 with an article about the ISP adopting the model 39. It shows a photo of a Trooper with the clarino holster
The S&W waters seem to be teeming with these pistols of late. Nothing wrong with that. My all-time favorite 39-2 sits in a lined Bianchi pancake on my waist as I type this, and another is on my bench getting medallions added to the smooth rosewood grips.
