Model 39 NM slide
Picked up an oddity on eBay the other day just because it was Odd. Standard 4” barrel slide with vent rib and ‘National Match” stamped above Smith & Wesson logo. Now I think I need to find a beat up Model 39 to install it on. Anybody have any info. ?

First I've Seen
I've been known to hang around eBay's Model 39 parts pages so often that eBay's threatened me with loitering.
I've seen some cool parts, bought 'em just about each time, too, and darn sure woulda got that one had I seen it first. be assured. Some of them, like yours, have had to await the story for 'em - in one case nearly five years.
Beyond the obvious with yours (the BIG CLUE stamped along the side), knowledge of the Model 39-to-be was first floated at the National Mid-Winter Matches at Tampa, Florida, in 1952, when Carl R. Helstrom, then-president of Smith & Wesson, showed Maj. Gen. Julian S. Hatcher, US Army (retired) the company's first "9mm automatic" pistol it'd been working on.
In all my years of collecting the Model 39 I've yet to see one mounted to a frame, either.
Be assured that should I see anything it'll make its way into this thread.
A nice find, Sir.
Later.

Thanks DCW. I will find a frame to mount this on along with Numrich to complete the slide. Beat up M39’s should be available at the Tulsa gun show. I now have two projects for cold winter days, the M52 I bought in a bag and this slide. Keeps me off the streets.

That slide is neat. What makes it a National Match? Other than the
engraving on the slide? I see the rib and sights. What barrel and bushing.
And slide stop.

I'M NO EXPERT ON M39s (OR ANYTHING ELSE, FOR THAT MATTER), BUT IMHO, THAT IS A RARE SLIDE, AND QUITE AN ACQUISITION ON YOUR PART.....
PERHAPS YOU SHOULD MATE IT TO A NICE RECEIVER OF THE PROPER VINTAGE, RATHER THAN A "beat up" SPECIMEN......
I'M NOT SUGGESTING THAT YOU CREATE A FAKE, BUT ONLY THAT YOU SHOWCASE THIS SCARCE PART IN A BETTER LIGHT......

THE QUESTION REMAINS, WAS THERE EVER AN ACTUAL FACTORY ASSEMBLED "M39 NATIONAL MATCH" ? ? ?
I HAVE OWNED SEVERAL SERIES '70, COLT GOLD CUP. NATIONAL MATCH, 1911 PISTOLS. THEY WERE DESCRIBED AS, "THE FINEST SHOOTING SEMI- AUTO IN THE WORLD. AND THE STANDARD BY WHICH COMPETITION PISTOLS WERE JUDGED". WAS AN M39 NM MEANT TO CHALLENGE THE COLT ? ? ?

“Beat up” was probably a poor choice of wording. I will probably just look for a “shooter “ grade Model 39-0 to put the slide on. Couldn’t take a no-dash 39 in pristine condition apart for a project. If nothing else, I’ll have an interesting pistol.

That pretty neat, but is this slide the creation of S&W or was it the creation of an unknown (or known) gunsmith? It's definitely not the work of Bubba, but back when the Model 39 burst onto the scene, target pistols were .22LR, .38 Special WC, and 45 ACP calibers, not 9x19mm.

It's obviously quite old, given that it is set up for the old style long extractor (which doesn't appear to be present, which makes this project perhaps an expensive venture...), but the right side of it shows us that the cocking serrations are further forward, which I have seen on the later no-dash models.
The pictures are a bit dark for good detail, but what I'm seeing in the vent rib doesn't look very nicely finished. At least in these pictures, it almost looks like a job that was left 90% finished.
The choice of an orange insert is also curious, as that was a trend in the 70's and 80's but it certainly wasn't a trend for Bullseye competitors.
Others are far more schooled in 39's than I am, but this looks like a one-off of a very short aftermarket kind of attempt to me.
Haha, I must say that I believe the Model 52 "gun in a bag" was a far better find!

Unless I am missing something, I see no reason that the frame choice needs to be a no-dash, it seems to me that a 39-2 (FAR more plentiful) would work just as well.
The extractor is going to be your hurdle.

If I cant find a no-dash frame I might use a -2. I wanted to find a complete ‘shooter’ grade no dash for the slide parts I need. The rib is better than it looks in the pics. I didn’t pay very much for the slide ($41) total. It should be an interesting project. I’ll update the post when I make some progress.

It wasn’t labeled as a M39 slide, just “S&W slide” in the title. I first thought it might be a M52 slide but its was too short. No pictures of the front. Guessed it was an early M39 with the long extractor groove.
