My parts bin has inspired more projects than my fingers are willing to build.

Yes, a well stocked parts bin can turn those "what-if?" pipe dreams into reality.

I've done well on some of the deals I've found on line. I haven't been stuck with any butchered parts, at least not so far.

I generally toss the springs, but most of the other parts are usable.


I did get one double stack side plate that was bent, but I kept is and use it as an assembly aid when working on the guns. A tip that JohnHL and Fastbolt have both shared with us.

Don't be too quick to 86 those springs.
The small ones are rarely worn out and as regards main and recoil springs, they can be tested.
I built a spring tester out of a piece of angle steel with a hole drilled through it and a long, thin rod to run through the spring.
Hang a plastic grocery bag with a combination of barbell weights (most of us manly guys have a set of those lying around) and add up the weights that just coil bind the spring.

A new 17lb. spring will require right at 17lbs. of weights to just coil bind.

I'll post some picks after the good camera comes back home.


Here's another tip if I haven't already told you:

Use an old pair of forceps (hemostats? What is the proper term, Gary. This is your metier, is it not?) to trap the firing pin when you push it forward through the breech face when removing the safety.
It's a lot easier than trying to juggle and manipulate two punches while steadying the slide.

If you are concerned with the jaws damaging the firing pin, wrap some electrical tape or slip a couple of small pieces of hose over them. (Although I've never noticed any marks on any firing pins that I've removed.)

Thanks for that tip. So far, I've only had to replace main, magazine, and recoil springs. Cheap insurance, as I say.

Forceps is fine, but Hemostat is acceptable, although you run the risk of no one knowing what you are talking about. Of course, if you want to be really cool, call them "Kelly Clamps."

I have no idea who Kelly was or why they are called that, but that's one of the names I know.

I put heat shrink tubing over the jaws of a pair to cushion the firing pin when I hold it forward to swap a safety or firing pin retainer.

I have several sets of forceps that I've accumulated over the years. They come in handy for a lot of things, including pinching the fuel lines in power equipment.

Some years ago I suffered the misfortune of having a "Foley Catheter" unceremoniously installed.

I never found out who Foley was but if I ever find him, I'm going to give him a piece of my mind.

I had one of those suckers inserted during a heart procedure several years ago. My nurse assured me, "Sweetie, don't worry. I'll use lubricant." Not one of my more fond memories.

Catheter: One of life's true miseries! Anyone that's had one of these "installed" knows exactly what I'm talking about!

LOL, this took a weird turn. Those parts cleaned up real nice! On original note, the 6906/669 only mean I can't two tone my 469 with it or for original manufacturing purposes?

I am going in for a hip replacement in under two weeks. I also Hate Dr. Foley for his donation to science as well. I had the left hip done 7 years ago in June so know all about it. Good thing I will be frozen from the waist downward and I am not allowed to carry a sidearm in the operating room also.

Original manufacturing purposes.

That hammer will fit any 2nd or 3rd gen TDA pistol.

That is an unusual hammer.

It is a very early 3rd gen, spurless hammer as evidenced by the flash chroming, serrated top, and lack of a 2nd gen, half cock notch.

Lots of small parts, as you say. Stuff that is becoming a bit harder to find as time goes on. I'd expect that the lot might turn up in smaller lots, which would be good for people who do their own minor work.

You know where the bigger stuff goes. At least for me.

So how did you clean them, what did you use?

One of my surgeries, I asked to have the catheter removed as soon as I woke up after the procedure.. Talk about an eye opener..

0000 Steel Wool and some CLP made them look brand new, and doesn’t hurt the flash chrome finish
