Default 6906.....a road less traveled

One of my many seller remorse deeds was rectified last week. While the current trend on this board lately has been toward small single stacks and DAO guns.......as usual I go in a slightly different path. For the past 5 years my 3913NL has been my CCW and for me no other 9mm is better at that role. I considered a CS9 lately for just a change of pace but the smallish grip didn't quite work for my gorilla like hands. It was akin to the HK P30SK that I had and the P2000SK that I still have but don't really shoot particularly well. Back in the fold last week I ran across a 6906 that wasn't finish challenged like a lot of the current examples that are available. Only one sign of carry wear on the frame step in front of the serial #. It came with one 12 round and 1 5906 15 round mag. I picked up 2 more 15 rounders and some PGS +2 sleeves from forum member jsbethel and after function testing will go in carry mode sporting a Glock like 15 rounds on board. And gives my paw a lot of real estate to get hold of. The only mod I can see is replacing the long diminished night sites with some XS big dot and trimming about 3 steps off the slide lock lever. .....................................................................and does anybody know the trick to eliminate or help with the gap on the PGS sleeve.....

My concealed carry combo since the early 1990s has been a single stack 3913NL for most days ...... with a 6906 or PC-Shorty-9 when I want a hi-cap or am traveling. The 69xx guns; from a practical perspective , are really no harder to conceal than a single stack.

I too use a 5906 magazine with a +2 adaptor as my extra mag. May I suggest Safariland's 123 Horizontal mag pouch that lays the magazine on top of the belt.......it's easy on and off,can be pushed back to the 9 Oclock position for carry and forward to the belt buckle for a reload. Also been using these since the 1990s to meet almost all my concealed carry needs.

My +2 mag does not exhibit that gap at the bottom of the grip frame!

The 6906 is a beautiful little gun, blemished only by the foolish, exaggerated slide stop and safety locks that protrude way too far from the gun. Other than that, I always thought they were a pretty good compromise if you thought you needed a compact, lightweight gun and the Commander was just not your cup of tea.

The first 469s and 6906s I was around did not seem particularly accurate, but my impression is that they improved as production rolled along. My own 6906, made in the last year or two of production, shoots very well, but the trigger is a nuisance. Improving the trigger is the only change I would make to mine.

In the 90s the agency I worked for (PCSO) issued 6906 as service weapons to uniforms and investigators. The idea was the service 6906 could be carried on and off duty. IIRC some 6906s had lower rear sights.

The U.S. Customs Service selected the 6906 to replace the CS-1 in 1989. It was a very good service pistol, and was in service until 1994. During this same time, Customs Special Agents and Air/Marine Officers were allowed to carry approved personally owned pistols, and many did. Then Commissioner Ray Kelly, the former NYPD Commissioner, ordered an end the the personally owned weapons, and the Glock 19 and Glock 26 were the only approved pistols. This lasted until 2003 when U.S. Customs was morphed into DHS/ICE.

After the DHS/ICE agency was formed, the legacy INS Agents brought their H&K USP .40 pistols into the service, and both were authorized by ICE.

In approximately 2006-2007 ICE went to the Sig P-229 in .40 S&W for their Special Agents.

That was kind of my thinking also on concealment ..........as with that gap....I disassembled them several times looking for something maybe I did wrong but each time come up with the gap..I did notice Robertsons had these listed and their pictures showed the same gap.....slightly being OCD it bothers me

M29since14.....exaggerated is an understatement....more like obnoxiously big.....the thumb piece drags on the inside of my holster....it is puzzling why SW didnt make it with a slimmer profile......and when I find a left side only decock lever I will replace it.....even with the 2 extra mags and 3 adapters I picked up here I'm still just south of $400

nocents.................

I tried 4 of my +2 mags in a PC Shorty-9, 6904 and a 6906...

With all combinations..... I've get a small gap that I could force a fingernail into; mic'ed that nail ...".05-.06 of an inch".

Now mine are old..... dating from the early to mid-90s

As to size of the slide stop and safeties.... remember these were designed as Police Duty guns......so IMO absolute concealment was less important than having a enough meat to assure a good release.

....that makes sense......I'm waiting for delivery of left side only decock lever,XS big dot sights, and then off to BMCM to get a little streamlining performed ......100 rounds of function checking proved usual 3rd. gen. performance
