4586 - How Rare?
Greetings - This past weekend at the gun show in Orlando I unfortunately passed on a 4586, mostly because I was looking for something else at the time.
I've not ever seen a 4586 in the wild, so I'm wondering if I should have gone back. It had two factory mags, box and paperwork and the vendor was asking $550 but I think he would deal since I had cash.
Did I just miss something special here?

They have been around lately on one of the more popular gun sites, There are 3 for sale there now.. I am not sure how many were produced, most likely around a thousand + or -.. I have one they are a nice gun, double action only.. The other two models with the same configuration is the 4546 and 4556..

The SCSW states these were produced between 1991 and 1999 so likely not so rare.

4586s are common. About 8 to 10 years ago police surplus 4586s were available from businesses like Bud's Gun Shop for $259 to $289. That does not make them any less of a gun and does not comment on the value of excellent condition 4586s, but they are not particularly "special."
My 4586 was $580 + ~8% sales tax new with night sights in 1996. The same year I bought a lightly used 1086 for $280 + tax. 1086s were not popular so their collector price went up. For a while the 1086 was worth 3 times as much as the 4586. The lesson might be do not take the crowd's advise here or elsewhere on what to buy. Worded differently today's unwanted turkeys are tomorrow's collector items.
Not long after my 4586 was made S&W quit making DAO slides and frames that were longer in the rear. The extra length allowed the hammer to be staged further back without it hanging out in the air. Consequently newer 4586s have a longer DA pull. That was not a good change IMO so newer "tactical" ones are worth less to me.

Got one. Had it for 10 years as a duty gun. As a training exercise, it would feed spent casings. Now its the house gun. Being an old revolver guy, I love the DAO aspect. But it is heavy. Hope you find another one.

Thanks to everyone who spoke up. I just wanted to ease my conscious a bit for not going back for it.

If it was in good shape that price would be good for me.
If you were talking about a 4596 that would be rare. I've only seen one of those & they wanted more than it was worth to me.
A 4586 is a completely different story. I set mine up to shoot 45 Super in. It's my sledgehammer 45 Auto.
