Is there a 9mm version of the 457?
I have seen & handled a 457 (being a 3-digit model # I assumed it was a 2nd gen pistol).
Is there a version of this pistol in 9mm, or even .40 caliber?

Second gen 9mm would be a 469, not sure about a .40 cal.

This one. The 457 is a 3rd generation "Value Line", among others with three-digit model numbers as mentioned above.

We have a winner! And, of course, in the bright/stainless finish world that I mostly live in, the Model 908S is the compact 9mm Value Line "version" of the compact .45 ACP Value Line Model 457S.

Three digit (457, 908, 915, 910, etc) 3rd Gen guns are "Value Line" as noted. They were made to compete on price with other brands guns. As a result, they used some plastic parts and had fewer machining cuts on the slides. The finish was also not as finely done as on the regular 3rd Gen guns.
They functioned with the same reliability, but just weren't as nice looking.
Unlike the other Value Line guns, the 457 has no directly related regular production 3rd Gen. The closest would likely be the 4513TSW, but the 457 has no rail.
Which makes it a very nice compact .45ACP that is easy to carry and shoot.

Thanks for the replies. While its been a while since I’ve fondled the 457, I have a 915 and it seems to me that it is much larger than the 457-assuming that it’s due to the double-stack magazine.

Yes, that's correct. The 915 is the Value Line version of the 5904. Another cost saving move was to move away from all stainless guns. There were "stainless" versions of many of the Value Line guns, but they used alloy frames with stainless slides. The barrels, to the best of my knowledge, were still stainless.
The stainless/alloy versions were introduced after the carbon/alloy version.

... and the beauty of that was that you could have a lightweight version S&W pistol with a stainless slide without having to put up with the later TSW's silly mustache rail and bulky ambi safety.

The model 457 is built on a compact frame as does the 908. The other "Value Line" pistols are built on the larger standard frame.
The 4053 and 4054 are compact .40 S&W offerings built on the same frame as the 457.

Except of course for the "CS" guns which were built on unique frames.

The SS 4513TSW w/o rails as well as the CS 45s are close to the 457 but are not exact upscaled or stand production clones of the value series.
The 908 is the value series compact 9mm... same idea as the 457. However, the
908 does have a standard series brother which is the 3914. And that is one fine pistol.

Thank you again for more replies. Do I recall correctly that the 908 has a somewhat spotty record?

That would be a new one on me. I own two 908S (stainless versions) and one 908... all flawless so far.

No, I don't think you do. I've never heard of any 3rd Gen model that wasn't completely reliable. There no doubt have been individual firearms that had issues, but not an entire model.

Closest .40 Cal to a 457 would be the 4013 single stack mag version(S&W also made a double stack mag version), which was a 457 in .40 cal. The 908 was a smaller frame size (3913 size).

Well, I guess it depends on what you mean by a 9mm version.
If you are talking about the Model 457 simply as a proud member of the S&W Value Line series, then all three 9mm models (i.e., Models 908, 909 and 910) might reasonably be considered 9mm "versions" of the Model 457.
