Default 5906 frame

Won another 5906 frame of that one auction site. Will cost me 183 after ship and transfer fee. Its an early square trigger step up frame. I have a complete slide and should have enough parts from the 3 kits I bought earlier last year to assemble it into a complete 5906 for roughly $350 total cost.

I may have the frame bead blasted for $20 if it looks worn. From the pics it looked ok but will know more on or around Tuesday. Ive owned 3 or 4 5906's but always sold or traded them off. This one will stay in my collection as eventually 5906's will start to get harder to find in great shape for under 350.

If you are going to blast it, have you thought of taking down the hook on the front of the trigger guard? I have seen several that were well done, and it looked pretty good.

I'll keep it stock. I got 2 90's era laser mounts I can use. I also have a b square scope mount on my 3906 I'll probably swap over and turn this into a target pistol.

Hoping when I call the mothership they can give me the product code along with date made. If need be I can find a slide with pre novak sights if it shipped that way to be as original as possible.

whats the difference between the early sights and the novaks? same slide dovetail cut?

Different cut for sure. The early fixed sights on 3rd Gens were simply leftover 2nd Gen slides. They added a dovetail for a new front sight but the fixed rear sight was just a simple blade in a dovetail while the Novak rear sight required a much wider dovetail and a ledge cut at the rear of the slide.

Got some before pics but going to be blasted. Should be done tomorrow or monday. Asked him how much and said no charge. A small nick on the dust cover that will need to be hit with a stone before I put the slide on and put rounds down range, but otherwise no cracks or breaks that I could see.

Will for sure be taking a cz50, 83, and 82 to him to get hot blued in that order to see his bluing skill. Have had some smithing work done in the past and been satisfied with his work, so should be good on the bluing.

I won the parts kits from that one auction site. I will probably look for new springs but use the parts I have. Less polishing for me to do.

TEP1xxx was made Jan 1990.

Product code is 104014 which according to the book is:
4" S 14SH FS AM 1991 1st Trigger guard.

What is the AM cant find the meaning in the book. Working on uploading before and after pics.

Bumping to see if anyone knows what the AM means. There use to be a thread somewhere that broke down all the end box codes but I can't seem to find it.

Otherwise will probably start the polishing and assembly process sometime in March when it warms up again.

Thats what I was thinking based off the SCSW 4th ed. Maybe I'll call s&w again and see if they can tell me more about the sku.

If you're interested in a guess, I'd say it stands for Ambidextrous safety. The SCSW mentions AMSF and AMBI as codes for that, but I see AM on some variations of guns that are TDA. I don't see it on any DAO or frame mounted decocker guns and I don't see AM with with either AMBI or AMSF on any listings in the SCSW.

Why they might have done that, I can't even begin to guess.

FWIW, my 1989 5906 has AMSF, while my 1996 6906 has nothing, as does the 3913TSW box I have.

As often is the case, it appears that there is no consistency from year to year or model to model.

My 5906 doesn't have the adjustable sights that my former 5904 did. It does have the 1st Trigger Guard, though.

I shouldn't be too concerned if I have the correct slide as it is a 5900 slide and this 5906 will replace the 3 or 4 I've gotten rid of at one point in time. Won't make the same mistake again when I got rid of my mosins and surplus ammo 6 months before the russian ban, and prices doubled overnight.

So installed the new mim hammer assembly from midway. Used several parts from my spare parts bin from a 669 parts lot and a 5906 lot I bought in the past. I've managed to make a cocked and locked 5906 with a 9.2lb double action pull and according to my lyman scale an 8.4lbs single action.

The reset is even shorter than my other 3rd gens. Doesn't feel like 8lbs maybe because I used a wider trigger. Used a 439 mag release nut, and slim slide release. Haven't shot it yet since I just finished it today.

Did the polishing techniques from the 3rd gen youtube videos and the pulls in both single and double are smooth and seem to break clean.

Will load up 2 or 3rds in case I screwed something up and it goes full auto which I highly unlikely see doing.

Its just turned out that way. Im assuming one of the levers is probably worn, but with the safety on no matter how hard I tried to pull the trigger the hammer wouldn't drop. Ill post pics later. Maybe do a video if I can figure that one out.

That would be the "Sear Release Lever".

2nd lever from the right.

With a worn sear release lever, sometimes pressing down on the rear of the slide, holding it down tight against the frame, will allow the safety lever to drop the hammer.

When I wish to temporarily convert to "cocked and locked", I will substitute the "sear release lever" from a DAO model (called a "firing pin retainer spacer" on the DAOs) which is just a sear release lever with the lower, tapered foot (which pushes against the sear) ground off.

It's possible I could of used that part. I have all my spare parts in a zip lock bag. I'll have to try pushing to see if it drops.

This thread was resurrected at the perfect time... last week I bought a 439 slide assembly cheaply and nearly complete, to get the ambi safety I wanted for my 39-2. Then I still had most of a blued upper, so this afternoon I bid on and won a 639. The plan is to upgrade the blued slide with some parts I’ve got knocking around and add it to the 639 lower to make a two-tone 639... sort of 1980s Old School. I too love a well thought out Frankengun. (Or is it “Frankensmith?)

Uhhhhhh... 8.4lbs single action? Surely you meant to type "double action". Otherwise, that's a heavy single action pull!

Nope hammer pulled back, then again its a wider trigger so maybe its not sitting properly to get a good reading. That was the ave after 10 pulls. That or whatever parts I installed need some break in time. I do plan on putting 150rds through in one sitting when the weather can cooperate and we can get one of the grandparents to watch our yr old.

Got a new sear release lever on the way as well as some 4506 followers from midway. Thinking about what John said makes sense that the release lever is a DAO since the SA and DA pulls are so close together.
