Default Anyone notice the rebirth of the 10mm lately?

The rebirth of the 10mm (Don Johnson) round/pistols. They seem to be all the rage again. I wish I had not sold all mine off now. I had the 10xx set except for the unicorn 1046. I even had a stolen FBI issued 1076 for about 3 weeks until it was confiscated.. that’s a story in itself. ( unintended stolen purchase that was vetted through 2 FFLs). I might just pick one up again. ( Not a stolen 1076,.. a 10xx pistol) I really think it’s a great Bad guy stopping round . But the 40 cal had less recoil so it won the decade(s). ( IMO) Now the 40 cal has too much recoil so it’s down to the 9mm. At least that’s how I interpret the lowest common denominator mentality that pervades our culture.
Anyone notice the rebirth of the 10mm lately?
I was a Miami Vice fan back in my late 20s and early 30s. Don Johnson used the 10mm Bren Ten, then later a 645 and finally a 4506. Had it stayed on a little longer we would likely have seen Sonny Crocket with a 1006 or even a 1076!

I have loved the 10mm for years. My favorite is the EAA Witness (mine has 10mm with a .40 conversion barrel and a .45 conversion as well.)

You're showing your age when you talk about Miami Vice . You'd think with a name like 10mm , it would be an ungodly terror in the recoil dept. But it's not really , not even in my CS10 . Then you look at the prices they get for them . I have a 1006 and a 1076 also and they are great guns . I can see how you regret letting yours go . Old Don was the man back then , wasn't he ? I bet he could have had just about any woman he wanted . Remember how the bars were filled with guys dressed like him ? And the famous 2 day shadow ?

My guys at work (5 of them) have longslide Glock 10mm pistols. They swear by them. One is using a Beretta carbine in .40 as a basis for a 10mm build. We were talking mags and STI makes a mag that fits the Beretta Carbine but he will have to do some mods. It is definitely making a comeback.

Glock 29, I bought a dozen years ago, when Glock was just about the sole maker of 10's.
Last few years I noticed other makers 10's showing up in display counters. RIA 1911s and Glock 20s mostly.
Personal wishlist is a L frame 10.

I've been thinking about converting my Sig/Mauser M2, but for now this lowly RIA will have to suffice

Quite the opposite. I work for the largest FFL in the SE doing gun shows. 10mm guns do not sell, & most vendors do not carry any. We have a few only because we carry everything. 40 S&W is also getting hard to sell. We buy huge lots of used LE 40 cal guns. We get them cheap, & only sell a few at any show, & we sell 500 firearms every show. So here in Florida, 10mm, & 40 S&W are as popular as last weeks newspaper. GARY

Not a rebirth, never died, just never became mainstream, too much of a specialty item. I started out with the 1006 I currently have, a 1076 long gone, a Megastar 10mm long gone-piece of junk-unsupported case head, a Colt Double Eagle 10mm long gone-too rare to shoot, and a pre-lock 610.
I reload 10mm and 40S&W.

I've been a fan of the 10 for quite a while. It started with plastic then I found some steel. Now I hope to find a 610 without a hole in the side.

Since Smith won't make an M&P, I bought a XDM 10mm. Very cool. 16 rounds of full house 10mm on tap.

Love my 10mms. Have a few from different gunmakers. It's the only semi auto caliber I shoot. My favorite is my Virginia State Police issued 1076. My most carried is my G29, followed by my "1053." The XDM 10mm is a really sweet piece. Traded my G20 because a deal came up in my favor, but that gun was sweet too.

I'd give anything for a single stack M&P 10mm.

I think people are finally coming to the realization that the 10mm Auto caliber is the semi-auto pistol version of revolvers chambered in 357 Magnum. You can reload or buy the FBI load for low recoil, urban defensive purposes, or you can reload or buy full power loads for woods defensive/hunting purposes. It is a highly versatile caliber.

Me and Ted appreciate the 10mm’s attributes. Every year at the NRA convention when he stops by our booth, the 10mm topic always comes up. He’s taken a lot of game with his G20.

Many more models available now than 10 years ago.
Let’s see, the 610 is back, Ruger 10mm revolvers, Sig226, a plethora of 1911’s to choose from now, Colt Delta, Kimber, RIA, Ruger..... Longslide 10’s from multiple mfg’s.: Remington Hunter, DW Bruin, Glock... Many of the higher end mfg’s offering models..... And with so many options, prices are very reasonable. My Kimber Custom 2 was a little over $600 earlier this year.

I say yes, definitely a resurgence.

I listened to Ted Nugent's music as a teenager in the 70's. Then about 10 years or so ago I got his book Kill it & Grill it, which includes some of his hunting stories here & in Africa. He loves his Glock 10mm, and I decided I wanted a 10mm, but I really didn't want a Glock (not that there's anything wrong with them).

About 5-6 years ago I traded into a 1006 and boy was I happy with that behemoth, other than it threw brass over my right shoulder and anywhere from 20'-25' behind me. (my 10mm brass was in short supply for a while). Then maybe a year later my LGS called to tell me he had a KSP 10mm 1076, and at a good price (I want to say it was about $600 bucks).

I bought it, because I didn't want to lose it, even though I couldn't really afford it. I had to make a decision on which one to keep via a shoot-off. The 1076 won, because I shot it better, plus I like the Sig style decocker. I do miss the 1006, except for those winged rear sights, but I know I made the right choice.

I'm glad it's making a comeback! More shooters means more and better selection of brass & bullets. I'm quite happy with my 40's as well, in fact I'm carrying a P229 DAK right now. I may start looking for a DAO 10mm after the first of the year.

Smile I have two, one for each hand

I personally prefer the 10mm over the 40. I have been fortunate enough to acquire quite a bit of brass, and I reload them to my spec's for range use. I really enjoy shooting this caliber (along with many others )

I prefer the Sig .357 to them both, but the 10mm is a good round. I remember looking at the Colt Deltas and the 1076 which I ended up with the 1076 if that means anything. I love the Bren Tenn but for the last 20 years they have been a 1500-2000 dollar gun, these days not sure what they bring now.

The Smith and Wesson auto 10xx series are the best in the round iMO.

For at least the last two years.
I was living in the UK for 3 years... until last Feb. that might explain why it's so evident to me.

So the 1076 story FBI tale..I bought an what I thought was probably an FBI 1076 from a forum member in NC. I am not sure how long he had owned it. I believe several years. This was quite a few years ago as well.
Anyway, he used a pawn shop for an FFL transfer and I used my usual guy for transfer. As many of you may know, a pawn shop by law has to submit all serial numbers of firearms that come into their shop to their local police. So in the course of time that police department did what I suspect they all do with these numbers. They run them through the stolen firearms data base. Well guess whose pistol rang the bell? Yes my nice FBI issued 1076 was stolen from a retired FBI agent in the 1990s. It had been missing until around 2013. Needless to say the local NC LEO called my LGS and wanted the pistol returned to him. Our Local Ohio police came to see my FFL. A detective from Ohio then called me. Once he heard what had transpired he was fine with me bringing the pistol to them and issuing a statement. The police were quite pleasant about the whole thing knowing I was a collector not a common criminal. In fact they were sorry to have to take it..but take it they did. On the bright side the person who sold me the pistol paid me for 50% of the cost. It was the right thing for him to do but he was in no way obligated. He was unaware as well. I don't know what happened to the trail from him to the place / person he bought it from. I just moved on. BTW I thought it was probably an FBI pistol based on Serial numbers and markings. I never had a chance to letter it to confirm. The police made the confirmation for me and that's the rest of the story.

10mm handguns are flying off the shelf at my local gun stores here in Northern Illinois, especially Glock 20s. A S&W 1006 recently sold at my local store for $1,100 w/ 1 magazine/no box.

On Oregon A-list, there's a 1006 with 4 mags for $599.

I have three, a 1076, 610 and RIA 1911. I'm just glad that ammo is beginning to show up at LGS's and is not overly priced.

I had Vector Arms build me an MP5 K clone about 15 years ago in .40. I wish now I had it built in 10MM.

I’m surprised it’s still there, unless it hasn’t been updated.

I only have two 10mm's.....one I built on a 1911 frame using a Caspian slide and a Schuemann Ultimatch barrel. The other is a 4053 conversion, with a spare .40S&W slide and barrel.

Definately a lot of fun to shoot. I wish S&W would consider making an M&P in 10mm.

I like the 10mm. This is my birthday present to me a few years ago, and my only 1911:

I agree. The 10mm was kind of dormant for a while, then several manufactures suddenly started introducing guns chambered for it. In some ways, it's resurgence paralleled the 40S&W demise. When Glock introduced the Model 40, it became the first functioning (I own a model 20 cut-away) Glock I ever bought.

A 10mm project I started back in Sept 2016 is attempting to make 10mm rimmed brass for use in my 610.
Sized down 41M with the 10mm die. The area just above the rim that's protected by the shell holder doesn't get sized down, so that had to be 'machined' to diameter. And then trimmed to length. Too much specialty machining.
Took a 30-30 rifle brass and cut it to length with a tubing cutter, ran it into the 10mm die and then trimmed to length. This one seems to be the easiest to do. Only potential problem, and it might end up not being a problem, is the wall thickness of rifle brass, .017" compared to the 10mms' .009". With a bullet seated into it, the OD should expand by .008" on the diameter which would be .004 per wall. Still have to press a bullet into it to see if it'll chamber.
As more 10mm revolvers come on the market, hopefully Starline will start 10mm Rimmed production.

Oldman10mm, please don't take this the wrong way, but I have to ask: why? If you want a powerful revolver in this class that takes a rimmed cartridge, why not a 41 Mag or 44 Mag?

In the last few years up here in AK, the Glock 10mm's have become THE woods gun. Everyone is carrying them. I even switched my woods revolvers (.45lc/etc) to mostly being found with my Sig P220 10mm when deep in the brush. It handles those heavy bone busting rounds very, very well. I have the Glock 40 too, but found it's almost too big to haul around comfortably. Maybe I should've gotten the "normal" sized one but at the time, figured the longer sight radius/barrel would help me reach out and get the most from the 10mm round.

Referring back to post#35 by FoundFather, I have a M57 41M, I have a S&W 44M. I realize that for competitive events, the speed of unloading and reloading with moon clips can't be beat. Making rimmed 10mm is just for the be able to do it.
And bullets are available for the 10mm diameter that can be quite a bit lighter than the bullets available for the 41 diameter and produce higher velocities than what can be attained from 41M.

The EAA Witness is about as close as you can get to the original Bren Ten. You can get conversion barrels, slides, and magazines to 9mm, .38 Super, .45 ACP, .40 S&W, and 10mm. I have one fitted out for 9mm, .38 Super, and .45 ACP. I imagine the same slide is used for .40 and 10mm, but I have neither of those calibers.

Sadly, the Bren Ten is long out of production and, so far, every attempt at reviving it has been a total failure. The EAA Witness may be as close to a Bren as we will ever again see. I kind of wonder if EAA is missing out on some sales by not offering the Witness with a slide and receiver that more closely mimics the appearance of the Bren Ten.

Honestly, no. Articles online have been proclaiming that the 10mm Auto is making a comeback and will surely become mainstream since as early as 2013, but really took off once the FBI dropped .40 S&W.

Meanwhile, it's nearly 2020 and it's still an obscure cartridge with very few options available in terms of both pistols and ammunition. Most of the firearms currently available have either been in production for decades or otherwise are just rereleases/clones of older model firearms.
The fact that pretty much everyone has cloned the Colt Delta Elite and Glock 20 or converted an existing .45 ACP in their catalog to a 10mm doesn't say anything to the effect of 10mm Auto being in the midst of a huge comeback and it certainly doesn't indicate mainstream popularity, merely that it's in greater demand now than it previously was, so it has gone from an obscure cartridge with a cult following to a less obscure cartridge with a potentially growing cult following.

Don't get me wrong, I love the 10mm Auto cartridge and spent the longest time hyped for the asserted resurgence in popularity, but it has been years now and it just hasn't picked up the steam that folks in the firearms industry claimed that it was.

In hindsight, it honestly seems like all the articles proclaiming the 10mm comeback and especially the claims that it was poised to take the market by storm attaining a level of popularity like never before was little more than a viral marketing campaign which attempted to use the .40 S&W's retirement as a LE service cartridge to promote the more powerful 10mm Auto.

Unfortunately, it seems as though the majority of shooters felt that the .40 S&W was "too snappy" and thus the odds of the 10mm Auto (which is equally or more snappy than .40 S&W) attaining mass market appeal is highly unlikely.

The 10mm Auto cartridge will always have its place, and may have gotten a bit of a resurgence in recent years, but to say that it is making a comeback or will ever regain as much mainstream popularity as it had in the early days during its brief adoption by the FBI is a gross exaggeration. So please dial it down a bit before I start hoping for S&W to release an M&P10mm again, or worse, dare to dream of them reviving their 3rd Gen 10mm Autos like the 1006!

I think you missed the point of my post completely Dirty Harry. I never thought the 10mm would become a mainstream cartridge. That ship sailed long ago in the mid 1990s But there IS definitely a resurgence in the number and variety of 10mm guns available and being purchased over , let’s say , about 5 years ago, when Glock was about the only company offering them new. The 10mm is still alive and well to that niche market.

I love the 10mm. I started with the 1076 (traded off on this form years ago after I got my G20).

10mm Glock in a chest holster is my go to woods gun.

And the fact that so many 10mm models can be fitted with .40 S&W and .357 Sig barrels is a big deal to me.

I can see carrying .357 Sig, and swapping to 10mm hunting loads when stomping in the wild. That's my plan.

On Ohio-Columbus A-list, a 1006 with 2 mags for $600. I was tempted to respond, but no.

Default 10mm

If you think it's had a rebirth up to this point, wait until after next Tuesday (12\10), when Glock makes their big announcement. I am predicting (on good info) a Glock 19 size 10mm with single stack grip/mag. This thing is going to open the 10mm flood gates.
I have been a 10mm fan since I bought a colt delta elite as my first pistol after I got my permit. That pistol was traded of decades ago, and dozens of pistols/revolvers of every make, model and manufacturer of 10mm have come and gone thru my collection leaving my G20 SF as my only 10mm right now. I have a 6" Glock barrel i drop in when I want a G40. Great pistol for a great round. Combine this with all the pistol choices with now dozens of ammo makers coming out with 10mm including WWB 180 grain practice ammo for $20 a box. I can even get S&B ammo for $15.99 box of 50. These are .45 type prices which means the last hurtle to 10mm becoming mainstream has been cleared IMO.
Yes sir the 10mm is back and stronger than ever

I’ve been enamored with the 10mm for awhile, having 1911s chambered for it. I will likely pick up a G29 this month to scratch an itch and because I already have holsters for the G30. I would love to stumble upon a 5” 610 no dash.

My first 1911 was bought last month a 10 mm Kimber Rapide. Very cool. That goes with my 610 revolver.

I was 2nd on the list. It was a good enough deal that I was willing to make the2.5 hour drive. Alas, I got an email at 4PM Friday that the 1st sale had gone through. I was not surprised.

I've driven down to Columbus for guns off A-list a couple times. Last one was a 3913NL. Always stop at US Rt36 on the way back to get a bunch of 'sliders' at White Castle and then hit Fin Feather Fur up by Rt250 too.
