4006 Limited — beyond the grail?
A pistol that I honestly never thought that I would own. This particular model is extremely rare, the master list that skjos maintains says that 185 were made. The double-stack frame looks basically like the PPC-9 but the slide contour and finish work at the muzzle end look more like the first run 845 Limited. S&W says it was born on June 20, 1996.
I haven’t shot it yet. Honestly haven’t had time to do almost anything outside of work this time of year, which is good... haha, it’s helping me cover what it cost.
It isn’t dead mint and it has been fired, which I’m thrilled with. If (somehow?!) I had come across the chance to buy a NIB/mint/unfired 4006 Limited, it would be worth too much and I wouldn’t want to shoot it. This one will make my next range day and plenty more after that.

Beautiful pistol! Congrats!
You must have been a very good boy this year for Santa to have brought you that fine gun! Regards, 18DAI

I have zero .40 pistols and would have bought that one in a second. The plain truth is that I have never seen one of the long slide S&W pistols in the flesh. I recognize the expense, but money is just dirty paper, and these guns are timeless.
That one is awesome. Cant wait for the range report.

Great addition and a very special pistol.
I was wondering why you haven't posted about it ever since you got it. I was also wondering if you were the "777sevens" that was biding on one the week before you got this one. If you were you got a much better deal/example.

I’ll try to respond to these...
I paid more than it cost when new, I probably paid a little less than you might find one for if you could these days.
Haha, I got it closer to Thanksgiving than Christmas, but I needed to snap some pics and host them before “announcing it” to my friends here. Folks get mad if they don’t see pictures!
Re: “long slide”, just to be clear, this is a 5-inch “Limited” series pistol. Certainly long compared to the PC Shorty guns, but the crazy expensive 6-inch PPC-9 and 952-2 6-inch Long Slide guns are the real long slides in this arena. As far as I know, only ONE 4006 Limited with a 6-inch long slide exists, and even that amazing gun wasn’t shipped that way. It’s a fantastic story but that story is not my story to tell. Maybe I’ll ask him if I can tell that story and share it.
4006 Limited DAO? I haven’t seen or heard of one but we do or did have a forum guy here that sent guns back to the PC to have them changed up this way. I think that’s sacrilege and nutty, but I’ll always be in favor of folks doing as they please with their own guns. Mine is single action and I wouldn’t want it any other way. If it were offered DAO, I wouldn’t have bought it.
And Jim, yes, I did bid on that one and I had thought or hoped it would go low, that particular pistol had some sketchy things done to it that I did NOT like, but would have lived with for a good price. I had actually planned to bid higher than I did — however the recent 945-1 that I was in love with was also ending that night, so I opted out of the 4006 Limited and focused on that 945-1 and fate took over. It is also relevant to mention that Sarah15/Jim Brewster offered a 4006 Limited a week or two after mine — and that one is higher grade for sure, but that didn’t drop my enthusiasm even a bit. I did find it completely nuts that in 2.5 weeks time, three were offered for sale. I have gone YEARS between seeing them offered.
Suffice to say that I feel quite fortunate to have this one and that 945-1 also.

You did great.
The one on Gunbroker that you stopped bidding on had a lot of extra “stuff” with it including the hi-vis, (or whatever,) front sight.
That was the second time it had been offered after being sold so I’m not sure what was going on. As you said, if it could have been gotten for a great price it would have been doable though.

Well I am a card-carrying fiber-optic hater to begin with, but that awful front sight didn’t even fit properly, I thought it was sickening to look at but I give the seller props that the pictures depicted how -BAD- it looked, so you’d know it while bidding rather than find out later.
Now maybe the paragraph above paints a “nightmare” for folks that are hesitant to even bid on Gunbroker guns... but again, later that night I took down a gorgeous blackened two-tone 945-1 that was far better looking in person than the four awful pictures showed in the auction!

You can find how much by looking at the forum search since it was bought here if that helps.

Very nice Sevens. I happened to see that one right after it was listed here on the forum and was tempted but not a big 40 guy. Glad you got it and went to a good home plus good price too Post a range report once you take it out.

I can tone down .40 to a more target kind of round. I’ve got a massive backlog of component bullets from all the years of handloading 10mm, and my supply of .40cal brass is enough to last me a few decades, I’ll bet. There’s really never been a better time for me to add .40cal pistols to my cache!

Yep definitely several pluses there lol. I don't blame you one bit . I honestly have so much in 9mm 357 and 45. Last thing I needed was to have to add 40 cal to the list lol.

I think its rude ask what someone paid for an item unless the OP volunteers that information.

Very nice sir, I've gotten rid of all my .40S&W guns with the acception of my shorty 40, tho she may see the chopping block in the 2020 year....
To bad they never made any 10mm PC guns ...

I don’t really agree. If you haven’t shopped for some of these elite level handguns you may not have much frame of reference of where the market is. If you are actively seeking one and you see where someone just got a hold of one, naturally you’ll want to hear some numbers. If you happen to own one and you’ve considered letting it go, you might benefit from a current data point. So the question is relevant.
I think it would be rude to expect or demand a direct answer, but not rude to ask.
For me, in 2019, it was the right number. 2-3-4 years ago and I would have even paid more. My budget has changed in the last 1-2 years, as have my “wants.” I plan to sell this pistol... in about 25 years from now. And that is absolutely the truth.

Very cool gun but serious question: what makes it a 4006 Limited in DAO with fixed sights vice a Tactical 40 in DAO with a mag well?
Does the end label say the name? Are there any other differences in the three? Thanks.

If he has the end label then forget the name... get the 6-digit SKU/Product Code, that is as close to a definitive answer as possible.
And you know — you may have nailed it! Look at the slide, near the muzzle where the matte bead blasted flat starts and you’ll see a different, more perpendicular angle compared to mine which has a forward lean following the angle of the frame.
I think these are different guns. Good call!

Sevens:
Well now I am really confused because the Tactical 40 that I have seen has the angled slide cut like your Limited. You never know with the PC though. I tend to think the DAO above is closer to the Tactical because neither was meant as a target gun as your Limited so obviously is (SA, target sight). At this point just my opinion.

We had a member here that either isn’t active anymore or rarely posts any more that had the (real) Performance Center take a 6-inch long slide PPC-9 and make it DAO. Makes me cringe but then... it isn’t my pistol.
You are dead-on. With the Performance Center (as with all S&W...), you just never know. I know we have seen evidence of slightly odd 845’s and we’ve also seen a really oddball 952-1, and that one was discussed in here just a handful of months ago.

So, if I were so inclined, what's the guess on what the Tactical 40's should be bringing? Speaking of prices and all...

The two-tone (black slide, stainless frame) DA/SA Performance Center 5-inch pistol with the “Tactical” logo on the right side of the slide, near the muzzle?
I would say that if it was NIB/mint/unfired and also offered at auction by a known, respected seller, could top $2,500.
If you had one with no box, some holster wear and dings here and there and you offered it on the forum, it would probably sell at $1,250 and maybe sit longer if you priced it higher.
Realistically, that’s the range of condition, seller ability, and market price, in my opinion.

I have to agree with Sevens . He has told me numerous times at the auction it's all about who is offering it . Myself , I don't do the auctions even though he has tried and tried to get me to try it . I prefer to buy it when I see it . I don't have the PC collection he does , but I do have some beauties . I was glad to see he got this and the 945 , they couldn't have a better home , except maybe mine .

Not the two-tone, I was referring to the all SS model. They made 200.

Tact 40
Wish I would have kept mine. The thing that have come and gone. I see the 0039 on the flyer, mine was 0040. Joe

I’m less familiar with that one. I’d add $200-$300 at both the bottom and top end.

Awesome find! I like!
Lew Horton/Earl was nice enough to share this flyer with me when I inquired about my 845 Limited.
I was surprised when I first saw they made a .40 version.
Let us know how it does at the range.

Some info for the discussion
Relative to the discussion on the DAO Limited....
I did not get a box with the gun, but S&W customer service did research the serial number on mine and it show's no Product Code/SKU for the pistol on file, it was shipped in 2005.
However, I had them look up the .40 Limited I owned, which is DPC0013 and they confirmed the SKU as 170033.
The DAO gun is serial numbered in the same prefix as the other Limited guns - DPC00xx
Relative to no SKU aspect, it's almost certainly due to being specially handled by the PC when making it in the DAO configuration, I have some articles from Jim P noting the Police Chief in the Chicago suburbs who it was made for.
As for the all stainless .40 Tactical, that was made in the PCD serial number range, I did own PCD0013 in the collection for a time. That gun was not finished the same as the Limited guns, it was not polished the same, and also had the proud barrel (longer than the slide as shown in the pic above by Benton Quest). The Tactical models were DA/SA. The Tactical SKU was 104401.
As Jim P indicates, this is the only known DAO version of the 40 Limited.
Cheers......

I guess maybe I should have said, " GEE I wonder how much a pistol like this sells for? "
I'll try that next time.
Lighten up Francis.

My 4006 Limited is one of my favorites. Fun historical piece in my eyes, it was a test gun for the legendary Jerry Miculek as noted in the historical letter.
Congrats on your purchase. PC autos are just a thing of beauty and perfection!

Why didn't they just call it the 840 Limited?
It's funny to me that S&W was so intent on getting the most mileage out of the "4006" designation.
Too many unique Performance Center pistols got tagged with it that seem like they should have had their own model numbers.
Or is it just me?

The idea of “840” hadn’t ever even occurred to me until I just now read what you wrote.
I’m all for it!
Truth is, we are half way there. Just like the (first run) 845 Limited, it is one of very precious few modern S&W handguns that does NOT wear a model number anywhere actually on the handgun.

Trail for the Grail
I remember seeing the 4006 Limited for the first time and I said it’s not for me. At the time I was probably on the look for a few PC revolvers. Over time my opinion of this pistol had changed as a few were popping up, so the search began. I lost a few auctions and checked the forum later then I normally do in the morning to see I missed out on another one. I’m happy with the one I ended up with.

Joedegs, yours is a special one (some way, somehow?) because it wears the PCZ serial prefix. Do you know any back story to this pistol?

I was told, The PCZ Serial Prefix Is Known As The PROTOTYPE Frame Serial Prefixed Used By The Performance Center. These Examples Are Rarely Found Outside The Factory. Excellent Example....Very Few PCZ Serial 4006 Examples In The "WILD"
I don’t have a story for it yet...Very possible that it will be the first gun I have lettered. Though I do believe it once belonged to a fellow forum member.

Non-mint performance center guns are a plus to me - I'd rather shoot them than pay top dollar to let them sit in darkness.
Nice find, I myself managed to obtain my long desired 945 compacts.

I absolutely agree and I’ll add that of the 9 that I own, 8 of them are high grade but less than mint and I love them for exactly what you said, I shoot ‘em. The one that I do have that is dead mint doesn’t get shot.
I’d rather pay a little less and shoot them, but when the price is right, I’ll buy a mint one also.
