Default My yearly question, how did you do this last year?

This was a fun question last year and some of you mentioned some great “new” acquisitions.

I guess I need to be a bit more specific this year though since I really mean 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Gen S&W semi-autos since this is the specific forum. I appreciated all the responses last year but the CZ, Marlin, Glock, (,) and other acquired firearms really wasn’t what I was going for.

I totally understand that most of us already know how some of us did, (CherryPoint, Sevens, , and others,) but it would be great to get a recap just for those that are too busy to pay attention.

This year again I will stay out of it, but as some of you know I did very good with my “real” PC acquisitions and a few that were not.

Thanks for this years replies.

Jim

Still breathing and still shooting! Probably not of much interest to the 3rd Gen crowd but I’m nevertheless happy to report the M&P 2.0s I acquired this year have been great and have finally met the expectations I had for the M&P (plastic gun) series when I bought my first one of the originals long ago. Finally!

Otherwise, it’s been a fairly quiet year. I won’t mention the G-word, but I did acquire a P320 M17 to satisfy my curiosity about our new U.S. Army handgun. It’s nice, but based on my limited experience, I believe I’d rather have my 5-inch M&P 2.0, if I had to rely on a plastic 9mm. SIG was my only “off-brand” purchase in 2019.

I thought I already owned the 3rd Gen models that interest me, and have for years, with one exception. If a Melonite 4566 would come along I could be tempted. Likewise a 3914NL, which I didn’t realize was even made until just recently. Don’t know how I missed that one.

Well my focus has been on quality not quantity. I fell into a trade with another friend and collector for this PPC9, the pinnacle of Smith semi autos in my opinion. I snagged it out of the safe for this thread, excuse the poor photo lighting and setup. Man it's the finest gun I own.

I am not against Glocks or whatever. I’m very happy that I got my long wanted HK P9S sports group III this year. Love my Kahr PM’s too.

I was just saying, this is a S&W 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Gen section.

Hey now, I heard what ya said but you can’t deny my Model 422 with a clear conscience!

I got me a solid, shooter grade, fixed sight, 4-inch Model 422 and I got a good low price on this (kinda homely) solid little popper and it may not be a 1-2-3rd Gen but at least it ain’t Tupperware!

Solid shooter, good clean fun!

It’s a beauty and you snapped a great picture — under rated, in my experience, the fantastic finish the PC put on many of these guns isn’t all too easy to capture in a snapshot, or maybe I’m just that bad at it!

Questions!! First... I’d love to hear what you had to trade to bring home a grail gun like this! (if you can share) And second... from the single picture, I’m really curious about your hammer block thumb safety. From the evidence shown, it is non-standard! That should show flat black on the right side — yours appears flash-chromed or “stainless” as if it were a production part. What gives with the safety?

Congrats on a humdinger!

I'm a fairly new shooter of pistols, primarily for self-defense, my first purchase was a Springfield XD mod 2 SC.
Several months later I discovered a hammer fired pistol from CZ, a P-07, it was love at first sight. Through some videos I was able to turn a pretty good pistol into an excellent trigger SD gun. shortly thereafter became intrigued with the CZ P-09, and had to have one. I Transformed that particular trigger into something incredibly smooth and light , (so I thought ) Until ... this past year , and I don't even know how I came across S&W 3rd gen. ( which now has changed my thoughts as far as what a real pistol in your hand feels like.
I purchased an S&W 4006 TSW CHP..The trigger OMG.
The previous pistols I mentioned, so I thought had very smooth triggers & very low
Lbs pull. CZ P-09 (6.5DA 2.8 SA ) and I was proud of the work I was able to do to transform those pistols,( only by the abilities that God gave me ).
When I first pulled the trigger on that 4006 ( even though it was a much heavier pound pull ) I was amazed as to how smooth the trigger was.
After disassembling that pistol I was able to reduce the trigger pull even further through polishing is now amazing.
My recent purchase was a
4516 - 1 which is no different of a trigger pull then the first, omg. I now carry the 4516 - 1 in a Don Hume holster and will probably never go back to Plastic Fantastic.
for me , these heavier stainless steel pistols just give me so much more of a comforting feeling in the hand and way more confidence for self-defense.
I look forward to the next 3rd gen, and my thoughts now as many on the Forum probably think everyday, why in the hell did they ever discontinue this line of pistols.
P.S. I thank all of you on this form with your vast knowledge that have helped me I really appreciate it.

Sevens, I didn't know there was a discrepancy with the safety when I made the trade. What I traded for it was about $2100 in value so I feel like we both got a deal given my side was a multi gun trade.

Here's another shot I have of it under better conditions and the other side of the safety. I have not lettered it yet, nor started a thread. What are your thoughts?

My thoughts...
I probably wouldn’t spend money on a letter as I doubt that Roy has any enlightening information to share, even though I would love to read whatever he might say. I’ll also say that either the fantastic photos mask any condition dings or blips -OR- man, that sucker is in high grade condition, it just looks plain mint.

Oh yes... the thumb safety! The left side picture confirms what I suspected, it simply looks like a production single-sided safety put in there, not what most PPC-9 pistols shipped with. Typically you would have a single sided flat black hammer block with a longer extended and enlarged paddle. It actually looks very much like the hammer block thumb safety that was OEM on the Model 745. The 952, 3566 Limited, 845 Limited and 4006 Limited all wear the same hammer block thumb safety that (I believe) your PPC-9 should have shipped with too.

Not a big deal, but to hard core PC enthusiasts, it does stand out in the picture! On the range, it means pretty much nothing, I’d think. And of course, extremely easy to swap the part in/out but I would guess that the “correct” part would be quite difficult to source.

I’ll also say that $2,100 in cash would be under market for a PPC-9 in that stunning condition. She is a beauty!

Doc1500, while your question was likely rhetorical in nature (re: why did S&W kill off the 3rd Gens...?) I will still offer my opinion for an answer...

When they finally dropped the axe, it was simply a matter of production focus and floor space. Obviously, polymer framed striker-fire pistols rule the service/Law Enforcement contract world and S&W is a for-profit venture, so the M&P line was then and is now the uncontested cash cow for high volume production. Keep 3rd Gens too? Well... maybe, but not with 1911 production also.

I believe it was S&W’s desire to sell 1911 pistols (along with 273 other gun makers, SIGH) that made them close the door on 3rd Gen “old technology.”

It simply has to be M&P production for volume and capital, but S&W chose 1911’s over 3rd Gens. I think if they had skipped 1911 pistols entirely, we might still see some metal frame DA/SA work horses.

Squidsix's 6915.......... FrankenSmith; 6906 frame mated to a 915 slide and 4" barrel.

As to why they were dropped...... everyone felt the need to compete with Glock for the law enforcement market......which Glock dominates not because they make the "best" gun (it's not a bad gun). But because they got classified as a DAO and had a marketing strategy that almost gave their guns away to build market share with the bean counters..................

Despite my yearly resolution that I have "too many" 3rd Gens, I had four acquisitions and one disposition.

Acquired,

457 (Almost new, complete in box)
6946 (ANIB)
3914 (ANIB)
457S

Disposition

457

The one I "didn't need" was the 3914, it was just too pretty to pass up. Well, I didn't need the 6946, but it was both too pretty and too inexpensive at $325.00 the door to pass up. I had decided that double stack DAO guns weren't for me, but you know how that goes.

The 457 was just a newer production version of the other 457. The big difference is that the trigger play spring seems to be steel of some sort, not that brass colored thing.

The 457S was a surprise acquisition, a very pleasant surprise.

I only have one "want" among 3rd Gens, and that's very unlikely given the purchase restrictions in this state.

I added a 745, 4006TSW and a 4566. All basic production models but still a blast to play with...

I landed a baker’s dozen last year. Some were better examples of guns I’d already owned but a few were high on my BOLO list. Most notable were a 945 and 945-1 as well as a Shorty 45 and MkII.

Default glad to get something to join this sub-forum!

Until June 2019, I seldom ventured into the S&W semi auto's sub-forum as I was always happy with my 1911A1 war relics, and my Browning Hi-Power.

Then in June 2019 I fell into a LNIB Model 39-2 and as previously posted..........I love this gun! It shoots as well as my BHP, points good in my hands, trigger action is remarkably smooth to me, and it is an easy gun to handle and carry if I am so inclined.

The only drawback so far is that I now spend a little more time over here instead of wheel guns, and of course......you guys are the same sort of enablers that frequent the other sub-forums..so now the "next" slippery slope begins for me, and this thread ain't helping with the above posts about the rarities and treasures still awaiting out there somewhere!

I'm really trying to stick by the rules but it seems unclear to me if this should be 1-2-3rd Gen only and NOT the Performance Center gems. Excluding them seems wrong to me.

2019 was the best year I've ever had with regards to PC guns. I don't expect to ever repeat the feat but I was fortunate to add three and all are genuine grail guns.

It was March when I brought home my 3566 Limited and this one was formerly owned by a very prominent PC collector here in Ohio. High condition but not mint, and this seems to be EXACTLY where I like to be with my PC guns. If I get one that is dead mint then I don't wish to shoot them and add wear. This pistol came with an accessory 9mm barrel that was fitted by the Performance Center years ago. Don't have the original box or the end label but I was fortunate to get a period correct blue hard plastic early PC box that I like a lot. I believe that this is the correct box for this pistol, but we do know that it isn't it's original box.

My two-toned 945-1 came in mid-November. It's my own opinion that this particular 945-1 is the single most handsome 945 of the huge array that was offered. It looks like a brother to the 3566 Limited. If there is a more visually appealing 945 out there, my eyes have not seen it.

It was just a couple weeks later that the opportunity to get the 4006 Limited appeared and my heart skipped a beat when I saw my chance at it.

Both the 945-1 and 4006 Limited have been featured in recent fun discussions here in this forum, so I won't recap them here. But 2019 was a banner year for my gun safe.

Performance Center additions SHOULD be included absolutely yes of course.

I’m having a good time reading about all the great pistols mentioned so far. It seems I missed a few when they were originally brought to our attention. (Or maybe they never were and this is the first time.)

My 1st Gen. acquisition - S&W Model 27, .357 Mag. . This model is the rare 5-inch barrel model manufactured in Oct of 1954. This is a 5-screw model with shiny bore with revolver having 99% original finish. Both trigger and hammer are target models, each being 0.5” wide. It has oversize Congalo Alverizs grips.

I'm not going to get into everything I bought , just the last one , a 945 . It's product code 170147 which follows my 170104 which was the first run . It's not as nice as Sevens , mine is flat black . But still it's a fine looking piece of PC perfection .

Cherrypointmarine may have brought home more 1-2-3rd Gen and PC semiautos than anyone. Not that it is a competition or anything.

I just realized I did not purchase a revolver in 2019. How did I let that happen?? The only S&W's purchased were 1st 2nd and 3rd gen.

A pair each of 59's and 459's with a 5906 on the side!

Happy New Year!

I snagged two neat S&W revolvers in 2019. But the first rule of semiauto area is that you don’t talk about revolvers!

Baloney! Excluding the thread drift aspect, I’d hope no one here would be “offended” by someone picking up a nice revolver (like Bigboy’s .357 Magnum). BTW, Bigboy, I’m afraid your revolver has a shoe rather than a target trigger, doesn’t it? Still, a great looking .357, from what I see. Congratulations!

I’m sad to say this past year was another one during which I too didn’t purchase a revolver. Kind of a sad thought, for me. Maybe I can remedy that in 2020. I keep arguing with myself about buying one of the new Model 69s. I need another .44 Magnum “like a hound dog needs two tails.”

Found a nice little four inch nickel plated S&W 15-4 at a local pawn shop. $325 OTD w/ a box of ammo. Perfect nickle. Tight as a tick. Wonderful DA/SA. No marks on the recoil shield. Looks hardly used. Since then ... have fired about 300 rds. of little 130 gr. FJM's and 125 gr JHP Plus P Remingtons. Outstanding revolver! Extremely nice. Very thankful.

Also, bought as much Remington .38 Special 125 gr. JHP's as I could at Walmart before they ran out. Also 9mm. Ended up with enough of each caliber to keep my guns happy for maybe a few months. :-) Sincerely. bruce.

Well it wasn't an auto . . . But I figure you guys would appreciate what I did snag. It's a 16-2 K32. Somebody would put it in a collection, but I'm shooting it. It does have a bit of blue wear and fingernail polish on the front sight, so hopefully the collectors on this site aren't getting light headed.

Alright now , I even bought a couple of revolvers this year . A 586 Silhouette , 30-1 and a 60 . The last two are BNIB . I figure if they talk to you , buy them . And thanks Sevens , but I don't think I bought that many , maybe the wife does . That could be why I had to buy another safe .

Krogen , I just read yours . I would do almost anything to get my hands on a M16 . You can't ask for a better round than a .32 mag . I guess you could ask , but what the hey .

Here we go again. Just like last year.

I too have gotten a few really nice S&W revolvers last year and some very nice/historic knives. I started this post in the S&W Semi-Auto section like I did last year. I didn’t post the question in all the revolver sections OR the Firearms and Knives, Other section. I think I even explained myself.

Maybe someone should start a like thread in one of THOSE areas?
Don’t misread this, I really, (really,) like all firearms, (well most, ,)

CPMarine, the 16-2 is NOT a .32 Magnum.

Sorry 4T5GUY if I’ve inadvertently contributed to the dilenquency of the thread direction. I’m guilty - one of those guys that likes just about anything that S&W made that goes bang. (Also with a few exceptions. )

I think it happens innocently... if most folks visit the forum the way that I do, they just load all new posts and they don’t realize that it’s in any particular area of the site. They see we are talking guns from 2019 and they add theirs also.

I had a very interesting year. When I look back I can only describe it as a year in transition.
I bought several 1st and 3rd Gens. But also sold a bunch. But I also starting acquiring more Non S&W stuff mainly old or unique .32 autos and Sigs.
Acquisitions:
(2) Pre model 39s
Nickel 39-2
3914, 3914TSW, 3914DAO, 3954, 3914NL, 3914LS, 3913NL, 4505, 4506-1 (again) 457s, and 909 and 4006TSW CHP...I know I have forgotten a few.
Once purchased photographed and shot IF they were not Unfired examples or duplicates, I started to sell many of them off that I was not going to use. My thinking on this was that black 39x style handguns although fun to acquire and great in their own right have no real collector appeal. I have also started looking at PC guns and I also get bored pretty easily and want something different. This year will be focused on quality not quantity like PC guns and LNIB "rare" examples or pure shooter grade fun guns. (Example the 4006TSW is being turned int a dual .40 cal with a 357 Sig barrel project. Also finding a good candidate to mount a reflex sight to, likely my 4506, and have an action job done. I have also started to re acquire a lot more S&W short barrel & PC revolvers, and other brands that are unique or collectible or fun to shoot.
I just bought a Sig P210 for target shooting..boy what a beautiful gun.
I also have purchased several very early (1976-1979) P220s in various calibers...45ACP of course but also 9mm, 30 luger and I am hunting the 38 super as well as the Browning BDA imports of same gun.
As you can see it was a tumultuous year. I am still looking for a decent priced 10xx just as a shooter. One thing I think I have learned this year is you can get just about any gun wanted from auction sites. (just be willing to pay) But I find it a lot more fun trading through the forum and FTF and LGSs. Happy New Year.

Bought a 39-2 a few weeks ago. This was a bad year for me as I spent most of it fighting a nasty divorce

4T5guy , it's hard to control who says what . Yes you posted in the semi section , but anyone of us S&W guys can't help but brag about what we buy . At least you didn't get the whole crew from that (other) side of the house barging in . It's a matter of pride knowing you bought something special and you just want to share it with your FRIENDS .

M29since14 , I didn't realize the early models were 32long . All the ones I see are the newer run in 32mag . Thanks for bringing it to my attention . You learn something new everyday , if you stop learning you're in trouble .

Default Maybe it's punctuation?

Jim, I believe you asked a very clear question about the acquisition of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation S&W metal framed, center fire, semi automatic pistols, by members, in the last twelve months, but instead received all manner of responses concerning Sigs, Glocks, CZs, PC models, revolvers, goats, pigs, sheep, and just about anything other than the original topic.

I pray that interest in our beloved sub-forum category has not waned to the point of disinterest, but rather your question has been misunderstood due to the lack of a well placed comma.

To wit:

"(H)ow did you do this, last year?"

Answer: The same way I did this, this year.

or

"(H)ow did you do, this last year?"

Answer: I did very well, this last year.

Please forgive my grammatical jocularity, for as you can discern from my first paragraph serialized items, I am a staunch defender of the Oxford comma.

If I can draw any inference from the previous responses, I'm guessing most members loaded up on the pedestrian models during the time of the previous (anti-gun) administration and are now branching out to the less common models (around this sub-forum, anyway).

John

Of course just because I posted the original question in this particular section doesn’t rule out ANY responses.

I got a nuther Dobber Boy a few months ago.

according to the rules just one for me...started the year wanting to wait to find a shorty 45 ......but "settled" for a pristine 4513TSW when offered up by a forum member....the "fun" budget has taken a hit by my renewed interest in rimfire rifles..... . . .

John, you forgot dogs - specifically Dobermans.

(Some might say Doberman’s.)

Good year for me, as well. In order, I scored another 39, a 5903, 4513, 952-2, PPC 5", another 745, 6590, another 39-2, a 19-4(it's a Smython!), another 39-2, and to cap it off, two 3566 factory comp guns. One in 356TSW, the other is 40 S&W. Finally a Smith built PPK/S.

Scored a few Colt 1911's in there as well, but that is another story...

Oh, and three Glock 19's, Gen 3.

It would definitely be "Doberman's"!!!

And don't try to take it away, because that would be one peeved pet!

Scored a few Colt 1911's in there as well, but that is another story...

Oh, and three Glock 19's, Gen 3.
Great, now there's no pistols left for anybody else, you bought them all. lol

I was in a firearm coma for nearly the entire year. Just a lot going on. 4th quarter though, things really heated up and I scratched a few itches. One has half the name of our forum and the others will...die hard.

The only recent purchase that I could actually mention in this thread was acquired about 7 hours ago (2020), so I have to wait 361 days until I can tell you all about it!
