Default New To Me 539....

Bought this 539 from a fellow forum member. Picked it up from my FFL today. Can’t go wrong with an all steel and wood S&W autoloader. Especially one with adjustable sights.

I like it! Also of note, a less obvious bit... the right side stock is old school. It is not cut for ambi-decocker. It wasn’t long after this that S&W quit using that right side stock design, they went to the modified one for use with ambi-lever pistols, even if the actual pistol didn’t require one.

I believe that all of the late production Model 52 pistols had the modified right stock that was cut for ambi-lever use.

Nice gun!

I really like the blue guns with wood stocks. Classy!!

I picked mine up Dec 2018. Has a ship date of Dec 1981.

Sevens, my 52-2 has a ship date of March 1980 and doesn't have the cutout. Do you know the approx. date of when the stocks changed?

I definitely don’t have a hard date, I have myself under the impression that the three-alpha serial prefix guns all have the ambi-capable right side stock and those were probably, hmmmm after maybe 1986?

Tough call!

Nice ,
Another unique feature on your 539 is the wide extractor feature that briefly appeared sometime in the early to mid 80's.
I Had a 459 around 1985 with that feature but it was unfortunately stolen many years ago.

Edited to add:
I just checked my 539,
( its a fairly early one at serial A-79271x )
it has the thin extractor

That stubby extractor was designed at the behest of the U.S. Army when S&W was competing for the Army's planned replacement of their M1911's with a high capacity 9mm pistol. The stubby extractor required no tools for removal and replacement. When the U.S. Army rejected the S&W 5904, S&W went back to pin retained extractors.

I don't remember ever putting the ambi right stock on a 52. I left there 1989. But I did move to the other semi autos around 86-87.

Super nice and I like the rear sight. Great having all steel. Sounds very durable too.
