3914 value
Hi, I have a 3914 that’s collecting dust in my safe. It came with the original receipt but I’ve misplaced it. I believe it was a 1991/92 purchase, I’m second owner. I have the manual (1989 print) and warranty booklet (1990 print) but no box. I’d say it’s in 90% + condition. It’s been shot but no signs on barrel. Thinking about making some room in the safe. Had it on armslist without any hits after a week. Not sure if my price is high or if it’s just not a commodity here. Never shipped a gun before so I’m hesitant to try here or gunbroker. Is the paperwork of any value if I tried to sell separately?
Thanks in advance.

Selling your paperwork separately would likely be looked down upon. Most folks like to think they are being sold the entire package of what the seller has, and if they were to find out that wasn't the case..... well, there are terms for that.
A 3914 in good condition with box and papers should sell for anywhere from $450-500 in my opinion. One with a bit of provenance, such as a 3914DAO NYPD gun might go for $100 more. Again, my opinion.

If I was you , I'd sell it here . What better place , where you're going to reach S&W fanatics . I would be surprised if you hadn't already received PMs about it . Shipping is easy , just find an FFL near you , they do the hard work . If you do sell it and ship it , make sure you include shipping in your price .

There’s no mystery or weird “stuff” going on here in the want to sell or trade section.
Just post the item with some pictures, (good pictures,) with what you think it’s worth to YOU, and sit back and wait.
This Forum is a very excellent place to sell unwanted and find wanted items. The only thing to be understood is that most know what some of these items are worth. (To them anyway.)

Yes, this is a great place to reach the audience for that pistol.
Regarding value, I would say about $400"ish" without the box.
Good luck!

I look on GB at what actually sold.
A factory new 3914 with a starting price of $745, ended with no bids.
A 3914LS rated by the seller at 85% sold for $389.
A 3914 described as good condition with the box by the seller sold for the “Buy it now” price of $440.
Not much used is selling right now unless its something a “special” buyer wants, or is priced low. I’d put it on here and put your state in the title. A local sale is going to bring you the most money. Adding in FFL transfers and seller fees jacks the price up too high most of the time.

Try to sell within your state locally if possible. You can try here too of course. I have had quite a bit of experience lately selling 3rd gen black pistols. The market is really soft for S&W 3rd gens except for a few hard to find examples. example 3914TSW or 3914 DAO NYPD. I also think most folks want a 3913 over a 3914 due to Stainless ease of care. JMO
I tried to sell a 3914 LNIB foraround $500 here and locally with no one even sniffing at it. No offers or even low ball offers or anything! That's just the market..nothing personal. The gun is worth that intrinsically but there just aren't that many that need one or want one.BTW I took mine off the market...I'll just keep the little beauty Even the NL version which is generally more desirable due to looks and single sided decocker are selling slowly and for a lot less than they were 3-4 years ago.
Then you have the problem of shipping costs and FFl fees. Add $50-$75. More than 10% of a $500 gun.
I think except for this S&W 3rd gen Forum the S&W 3rd gen guns are just are not on people's radar as much anymore. So this forum definitely sets the average price people are willing to pay for a given 3rd gen gun. You might get more (even a lot more) on an auction but that's not very likely for a 3914. It will likely sell at market price or lower...again due to fees.
That said.. it only takes 1 buyer... Good luck!

Thanks for the info everyone. My price wasn’t out of line on armslist. I don’t sell very often but I usually get at least a tire kicker. May just keep it in the safe a while longer.

The post-Christmas season is not a good time to sell because most folks don't have the money, so it might be best to wait until the IRS ponies up some nice tax return checks.
I have to parrot the advice of others to give forum members the first shot at your offering.
