Default 5906TSW Replacement Barrel or 4006tsw conversion?

Hey Team 3rd Gen,
I recently got an alert that Midway received a few replacement 5906TSW barrels. I picked one up just in case and thought I’d share, since they don’t come up too often.

That said, I also have a question for the experts. The bottom of my old barrel, on the sides near the feed ramp, has a weird peening to it, presumably from moving when the pistol fires. I bought the gun as a police trade in, and while it seemed to be in good shape with nice rifling, there’s no way to know how many rounds have been through it. Is that normal on this gun?

I bought the replacement barrel and I was surprised at how different it was than the barrel that came in my 5906tsw. My pistol’s serial number starts with VJC and was made in 2001. The barrel has grooves along the sides of the feed ramp, and the cut to accept the guide rod is very shallow.

In contrast, the new production barrel doesn’t have the grooves on the side, and the cut to accept the guide rod is much deeper. Idk if this is a tolerance issue or an intentional engineering choice, but when the newer barrel is in the slide, it’s much easier to reassemble the pistol, and less downward pressure is required on the firing pin safety lever and sear release lever to pass the slide over them.

There are other smaller differences too, like 9mm vs 9mm Parabellum, and what may be a different finish (or it may just be the result of 18 years of wear).

I’ll be sure to post pictures later.

Just another point I wanted to discuss that I didn’t really think needed it’s own thread. I have both a 5906tsw and a CHP 4006tsw. I like the integral rail on the 4006, but I prefer the lower recoil and cost per round of 9mm. I remember reading that the 5906tsw is really more of a 4006 modified to 9mm than a true 5906, and now I have a spare 5906tsw 9mm barrel, so I had to Frankenstein a 9mm CHP 4006tsw together!

I was pleasantly surprised that the 9mm barrel fit into the .40 slide perfectly, with no discernible play. Certainly no more play than my 5906tsw has with its original barrel. I reassembled the 4006tsw with the 5906tsw barrel and it seemed ok. I loaded it with a 5906 magazine full of 115 grain 9mm and hand cycled them and they all cycled fine, although every other one either went flying out very far or just popped out a little bit. I haven’t had a chance to play with it beyond one 10 round magazine. Idk if the weird pattern was due to the .40 extractor or if I was inconsistent in my slide racking, or something else, but I thought it was worth discussing.

I’ve always wanted an integral rail 9mm 3rd gen, and I’m curious if I just stumbled upon a way to make a reliable one, or if the differences in extractors (or some other factor) could trip me up.

Again, I’ll try and get some pics up tonight after work.

As promised, here are pics comparing the old and new 5906tsw barrels. Some of the differences are obviously due to wear (like the peening on the sides and bottom of the feed ramp), but some differences are either tolerance or intentional design changes (like the size of the cutout to receive the guide rod).

This angle shows the cutout better and also compares the 5906tsw barrels to a CHP 4006tsw barrel. Note that outside circumference of the barrels is about the same, and the cutout on the 4006tsw seems to be about the same size as the new 5906tsw.

This picture shows that the 5906tsw barrel fits very well in the CHP 4006tsw. I found it interesting that the space in the slide for the barrels seems to be the same size, even though the 4006 seems to have a taller slide.

Default slide swap?

Does the 5906 TSW slide fit the 4006 TSW frame?

The first few times I tried, I could get the 5906tsw slide onto the 4006tsw frame, but it was very tight and would lock up. I tried it again today and it went on ok and moved freely. Maybe it wasn’t lubed enough before? Idk. At any rate, yes I can interchange slides now, which is cool. Putting the 5906tsw slide on the 4006tsw frame gets me the 9mm with integrated rail, which is awesome.

I need to get the 4006tsw with the 5906tsw barrel to the range to see if it extracts ok. I did some more hand cycling and it was perfect.

Great thread. Would never have thought it possible to do such a swapping of parts to essentially go multi-caliber. Sincerely. bruce.

In case there are problems to extract 9mm with the .40 slide...perhaps a possibility is to change the extractor for a 9mm TSW one...if it fits the 4006 slide...

looking fwd to the range report !!!

I’m hoping to take the 5906tsw, the 4006tsw, and all three barrels to the range next week. It’s been a busy time for me and I haven’t had a chance to do any shooting. I’ll provide an update soon.

Went to the range today and used my 4006tsw with my new 5606tsw 9mm barrel. The combo ran flawlessly. I put about 100 rounds downrange with no failures of any kind. Feeding and extraction were both perfect using Fiocci 115 gr. fmj. The pistol was really impressive and I shot it better than my 5906tsw or the 4006tsw with the original .40 barrel. I swapped barrels and used the .40 barrel to shoot some Winchester 180 gr. purple brass, and it’s just amazing to me how much less fun it is to shoot .40.

In my exuberance, I neglected to swap uppers between the 5906tsw and 4006tsw, although I see no reason why it wouldn’t have worked.

Attached is my first 10 round group of the range trip at 7 yards with 9mm from the CHP 4006tsw. I’m sure some of you snipers could do better, but for me, this was a good group. I’m happy with the results! (Except maybe for that one flier...)

Excellent project DMcBB. I am a fan of multiple caliber conversions. Did you use the 5906 recoil spring for the 9MM range test?

Thank you, DMcBB, for starting this thread and posting your results. I just picked up one of those late production 5906TSW barrels from MidwayUSA while they had a few in stock again. Coupled with a 5906 magazine, this will make a nice conversion kit for my CHP 4006TSW.

Awesome! Let us know how it works for you and if you have any extraction issues.

My sample size of one isn’t really enough to understand if this conversion will work consistently on other pistols. Plus, as some of the pros on this board like Fastbolt or BMCM have said in other threads, the 3rd gen extractors almost always require fitting so that the extractor will function reliably in a particular gun. As a result, each slide/extractor combo may be a little different.

I wonder if the .40 extractor that I have in my 4006tsw is in some sort of sweet spot that allows it to function well for both .40 and 9mm while others may not be so lucky, or if they would just always work, similar to how a p226 can be converted from .40 to 9mm with a conversion barrel but no change to the extractor.

I am giving it two shots. I secured two 5906TSW 9mm barrels and one is being converted to 357Sig. It will make my CHP 4006TSW a triple threat.

Wouldn't the breach face from 9mm to .40s&w be an issue ? Regarding the extractor/extraction? Please correct if I'm wrong ?

They are the same dimension. Refer to post #3 and #12 above.

Not much to update about the 357 sig conversion.

I shot it the other day. It speaks with authority.

If you decide to try it, here are a few of my personal opinions about the job:

I got a finish reamer from Dave Manson Reamers, bought a bottle of pipe threading lube, and went to town.

Mind you, this is not like the pansy job of reaming a 40 barrel to 10mm.
On the 40/10 conversion, you're only removing a "fat" 1/8 inch.
Turn the tap handle once and wipe your brow.

On the 9mm/357 sig conversion, you're plowing steel the entire length of the cartridge.
Pack a lunch and bring plenty of cool soft drinks to keep yourself hydrated!

And don't forget to save the chips of steel from the barrel in case you change your mind and want to go back to 9mm.

Seriously, ream the chamber, chamfer the chamber mouth, have the old caliber designation fill-welded, smooth the chamber top, have 357 sig laser engraved on the chamber, and finally, fit the barrel to the pistol (if needed).

I went to heavier springs (22lb recoil/22lb main).
Getting the grip on with that new, heavy mainspring is a bit of a struggle.

I converted 2 5906tsw barrels.
One for 4006TSW and one for 4006 (standard).
You must change the barrel cam angles to work with the standard 4006.

Because of the high pressure of the 357 sig round, I am hesitant to use these barrels in any of my aluminum frame 40s.

Perhaps I am being overly cautious.

BTW, as I mentioned on another thread, I tried the TSW 357 sig barrel in my CHP 4006TSW and the hood was too long although it fits just fine in three other TSW 40s.
I could stone the hood back a little to get it drop free, but I have other 4006TSWs to run it in.

(See next post for the CHP 4006TSW 9mm conversion.)

Good luck!

John

I want to give a shout out to the OP (DMcBB) for inspiring me to try the 9/40 conversion.

I knew the 5906TSW and 4006TSW barrels would interchange but I never shot it that way.

Anyway, Sunday was a colorful fall day up on the ridge, so I decided to shoot my as yet unshot (by me) CHP 4006TSW.
(The CHP shot it plenty! )

I remembered I still had an unmodified 5906TSW barrel and tried it in the CHP 4006TSW.
It fit and dropped out with no hood stoning.

So I loaded the CHP mag with Federal 180 gr FMJ and loaded a 5906 mag with Federal 115 gr FMJ and went out to the back yard.

Shot the mag of 40 with no problems, then switched the barrel and magazine to the 9mm components and shot the mag of 9mm no problem.

They both shot to the same elevation just left of POA at 11 yards.

I have plenty of 9mm pistols and have absolutely no need for this conversion (or for that matter, practically all of the other conversions I have done) but the Dr. Frankengun within me just could not resist and doggone it, IT WAS FUN!!!

40 breech face is approx. .6mm (.024") wider than 9mm.

Since most extraction pressure comes from blowback (when firing), the extractor doesn't need to work that hard.

Whether or not the 40 extractor would have sufficient purchase on the 9mm case rim in a marginal (and possibly desperate) situation like a round sticking in a dirty chamber during a shoot out is a difficult question to answer and would NOT be a situation in which I would choose to be.

In other words, Range Use Only!

Just as an FYI, I brought my 4006tsw out to the range again and ran about 100 rounds of 9mm through it with the 5906tsw barrel, and again it functioned without any issues and experienced no malfunctions of any kind. As I said before, this configuration wouldn’t be my first choice for use in an actual crisis situation, but for range use it’s fun, easy to manage, and cheaper to shoot than .40!

After reading the early part of this thread, I got onto the notify list at Midway and soon was notified that 5906TSW barrels were in stock. Ordered, fit and tried shooting in a CHP 4006TSW. As noted above, no issues at all using a 5900 magazine. Accurate enough for an old man at the range. Now these guys have me thinking about a .357 Sig barrel!

I am on waiting list at Midway for one.
OLD_COP You must have got one of the few that came in.?? I ordered mine on Jan 5th and they were backordered. $93 plus shipping. Mine is for a 357 Sig conversion that BMCM will square away. I would buy a 2nd for 9mm triple threat but that's what the 5906 is for.. maybe I should get it anyway just to complete the hat trick? That sounds like phase 3.

I was wondering if BMCM would be interested in converting 9mm barrels for all the members that would like to have one done at the same time? Instead of having to rent a reamer for each job and if the reamer would hold up to the task of several barrels?

I have question that will show my ignorance a bit.. If this is possible with a 4006TSW and 5906TSW barrel why not with a 4006 and 5906 barrel?

Different sized bell end of barrel (and consequently, barrel bushing in slide).

Different widths where the barrel sits in the frame.

You're welcome, of course!

And it was a very astute question.

Please forgive my short response, as I needed to be somewhere at 6:00 and I wanted you to have an answer last night.
