Default S&W 3rd gen factory mags - were they made in black?

Seems like most of the 59 series "factory" mags are nickel.

I have a few *black* 69 series mags that work great, but they are not marked with any letters whatsoever. I didn't buy them new.
There's no "S" on the side, no "S&W" on the bottom of the baseplate.
The followers look like the standard S&W followers - black and orange. So that makes me think they are factory.

They look just like the mags in the attached photo.

Sure were. Most of the "blued" mags came with blued guns, such as the 39/39-2 and in your case these are most likely 459/469/5904/6904 double stack mags.

There were many for 1st and 2nd Gens but for 3rd Gens the ratio of blued to bright would be shockingly low. S&W went great gonzo with stainless guns for the 3rd Gens and blued finish guns were scarce.

I have a NIB Model 915 that came with two silver/“stainless” mags so I find it interesting that yours came with black.

The blued 3rd Gens are relatively scarce in a couple of the models are really hard to find... 5905 and 4505 are nearly vaporware. I’ve seen NIB examples of either sell for nearly 2x the market of it’s stainless counterpart.

My S&W PC 3566 Compact came with two PC marked blue magazines, see photo. Also, there were some extended 356TSW magazines PC marked, see photo. I sold the blue ones and purchased stainless steel, no more rust.

My NIB 3914 (made in Oct-1989) came with black mags.

By 2015 they were just a faded memory, stainless steel mags only for my NIB 3914DAO.

I guess i should have qualified that. I bought it from a guy trying to sell it to a gun store that didn't want it. No idea if it came from the factory with it, but the mag had the same rust freckling on it the gun did, so they had been together since the moisture event....Price was too good, he only wanted $200 for it and a little oil took care of the freckling. Guy said he inherited it from his dad and the gun looked liked it had very little wear on it, may have not even been fired. I had no need for it since I have a 5903, but the price was too good to pass up.

I traded the gun and a 10round mag +$100 to another store for a 6904 that came with 1 stainless mag.

I've also got a few of the black 3914 mags in my bin, and of course there are the 4040PD mags that only came in black.

My early production 3914 came with black mags as did my early production 5906. I also have some black 6906 magazines. I don't recall any 457 mags in black.

I remember clearly.

The BUYERS went great gonzo for 3rd gen stainless guns and turned up their collective noses at the blackened guns (for good reasons).

S&W simply filled orders.

Sounded a little snooty there bruthuh John!

S&W has made truckloads of goofy decisions. You can choose the responsible party if you like.

Please forgive the curt tone of my response, Brother Sevens.

I meant no disrespect.

Often, I am simply pressed for time.

But as I recall, we enthusiasts had been awaiting rust resistant guns for so long that when the major manufacturers finally offered them to shooters, the response was obvious and overwhelming.

I may have mentioned this before, but I personally own a model 439 that was manufactured in 1980 but didn't leave the factory until 1990, a full ten years later.

It just didn't make sense to buy pistols whose slides (and sometimes frames) could rust and their alloy frames show every point of contact when for a few dollars more, one could buy a pistol that held its finish for a much longer time with less care.

Most folks thought the stainless guns looked better, too.

I think S&W sold a lot of blackened guns at a loss just to get them off the books.

It is now in the age of the so called "hillary hole" and all things MIM are the work of the devil (as espoused by folks to whom nostalgia is more authentic then reality) that the formerly unwanted models are held in such high esteem.

John

I'm now back home and looked at my magazine collection. I do have 69xx magazines, that I assume came from a 6904. I've never had one of those, but picked up the magazines somewhere.

I have no black 4513/16/457 magazines.

Something else occured to me. I've never seen a black CS anything magazine.

I remembered, without question, that my 4040PD's mags were black but your post made me think about the NIB (sealed) 4040PD mag I just bought from Brownells & if it was black too. Barely.

The original (2005) 4040PD mags are a dark black, except where they're scratched of course.

The NIB mag looks like someone rubbed some black shoe polish on it, in an attempt to "simulate" black, & called it good.

You can easily see the shiny metal thru the poor coloring job. Definitely not painted like the originals.
