Default Did the 645 have variations in the stainless finish especially when high round count?

I first bought a TBA-prefix 645 that I am very certain is completely original. I then bought a TBB-prefix 645. Comparing the two the TBB-prefix has variations in the stainless finish most notably on the barrel hood but also frame and slide (it also has a half-cock hammer) that I am concerned are the result of polishing. The brushed stainless finish appears identical to my TBA-prefix.

Were there variations in the stainless finishes, and did S&W install half-cock hammers at any point? The TBB-prefix does seem to have a higher round count so I wonder whether the barrel hood is simply wear. Thank you for the feedback and insight.

These are the best photos I could get:

I'd say the TBB one has received some attention from a previous owner. My 645's do have half-cock notch hammers, but I think this was deleted closer to the end of the 645 production.

Very interesting, curious as to whether others 645's have half-cock hammers too. My TBA-prefix which I am quite sure is all original does not have a half-cock hammer.

My TBN has a half-cock and is not as polished. What does the left side of the slide look like. There’s a lot of “stuff” on that side which might show the possibility of a cosmetic procedure.

I’m attaching an image to show my 639 with my 645. The 639 was a mess, but I was careful sanding and buffing it. It is too polished but all the snastie scratches are gone as well as the depth of the stampings. The 645 is untouched and not as bright, hope the difference can be seen.

The only S&W pistols I have that the barrel/hood is that polished are PC examples. Years ago when I was working on my 4506-1 I buffed the barrel but it is still not a high polish. The feed ramp is of course. It takes a bit more for that.

Regardless, nice 645’s. Gotta have at least one and you have two.

The TBB-prefix is getting returned - thank you all for your insight.

I pulled the hammer from my TBA-prefix - see below. It’s marked for a 645 and appears to lack a half-cock notch, yes? The prior owner said he did not modify the gun and that he bought it from the original owner in the late 1980’s, so while it’s possible the hammers have been swapped I’d think that’s unlikely. In D/A I can sort of feel the half-cock stage almost like it is almost engaged.
