Default 4040pd

Does anyone know if another 3rd gen 9mm barrel will fit a 4040pd,
Thinking a 357 sig would be interesting

Hey, sparkeyu!

It's been a long time. I hope you are well.

Unfortunately, the 4040 uses a 40 sized barrel bushing (not 9mm) and S&W doesn't have a 9mm model with a compact barrel that uses the 40 sized barrel bushing (unlike the 4" TSW 9mm and 40 models that share the 40 bushing).

I've done the 4" in 357Sig, and it's a hoot!

Thanks John,
Im even thinking if I could find a barrel that will fit the hood and lug
I cold machine a ring for the barrel to fit the existing bushing.
what do you think ?,was even thinking if it was a longer barrel I
could thread the end?

The only S&W barrel that fits the criteria is the 59xxTSW barrel (40xxTSW sized with a 9mm bore) but it is 4" long.

I have considered turning the bell end off in the lathe and a new bell welded on and shaped at the 3.5" point.

Or, as you say, machining a ring and shrinking it in place.

That would allow for threading the end.

I don't have access to a 4040 barrel, but the 9/40 TSW barrels have a more vertical cam lug angle than the base model variants, so that would need to be determined, although I suspect the 4040 barrel cams are the same as the TSW.

Another bit of info, the slide bore for the barrel bushing is the same for the 9/40, but the bushing is pressed in place so swapping the bushing back and forth would be a problem, even if you could find a 9mm barrel.

Another thing, base model 9mm barrels are thicker at the base than 40 barrels so they must be narrowed to fit 40 frames.

A few years ago the 59xxTSW barrels were more available than they are now and that can make the conversion difficult.

A lot more involved than just slipping that CS45 top end you sold me on my CS40, swapping the magazine, and shooting the combo!
