I have found a very good condition 4516. It comes with 2 factory mags and 1 dreaded Promag. No factory box. It is a consignment and has been there for at least a month. I presently have a 4566 with about 9 mags. I have 3 other 45's from different manufacturers.

I have had 2 carpal tunnel surgeries on my gun hand. I also have been experiencing arthritis in both hands. I have tried a Glock 36 and 30 but experience excessive recoil (for me) with both.

The price is $525 + taxes. So should I pass or go for it?

I own both a 4516-1 and 4566... the 4516-1 came first, and after I found the 4566, my 4516-1 now sees little use.

The longer length grip frame on the 4566 is easier to use, I always felt like I needed to have a "death grip" on the 4516-1 because it did not feel like I had a solid hold on the shorter grip frame.

I too have arthritis in my shooting hand and find the 4566 easier to handle.

In my opinion, unless you want one for the sake of having another .45acp 3rd gen model, or you're looking for a smaller conceal carry pistol (which I didn't find much noticeable difference between the 1/2" shorter barrel and shorter grip frame of the 4516 compared to the 4566), stick with the 4566.

But then... that's also a hard price to ignore too (compared to our California pricing)...

Took a quick look over at Gunbroker and saw better prices and that site isn't exactly known for stellar deals. methinks $525 is a bit steep for what you described. For a bare 4516 with two useful mags and nothing else I'm thinking around $400ish.

I have a 4516 & a 4566, both are excellent handguns. I've never considered my 4516 to be anything but awesome.

I agree that they need to lower their asking price closer to $400, maybe as much as $450 for a really nice one. Let them know that you don't consider the Pro Mag as having any added value to the deal.

I think you'll really enjoy owning one. Out of all of my 45 acp's, the 4516 gets the most range time. Never had any problems with it either.

I currently have a 4516-1 and have had a 4566. Both great guns. $400 to $450 is about all I would pay.

My only hesitation here, is your carpal tunnel. I do not know how the recoil of a 4516 would effect it.

Having fired every gun mentioned in this thread and owning a bunch of 4566s and 4516s, I will try and give you some insight into the comparable recoil of each, to ME. Remember, recoil is subjective. What you find objectionable may not bother me and vice versa.

I found the G36 to be the worst in felt recoil. In fact, next to the Kahr CW45 the G36 was the most unpleasant compact 45 I have ever shot. The G30 was not as bad, but still 3X the felt recoil of my 4516-3 and 2X that of my 4516 no dash.

Of course being bigger and slightly heavier than a 4516, a 4566 has the least felt recoil of all the pistols mentioned here. If you are OK with the felt recoil of a 4566, I would advise you that the felt recoil with a 4516-1 or 4516-2 is 1.5X more than that of a 4566 using the same ammo. Hogue rubber grips help reduce that - A LOT! In your situation I would buy them and use them on the 4516.

The exception in this case would be a 4516 no dash. The no dash 4516 is the thinnest and lightest of the 4516s. Its felt recoil is highest among the variants. I would rate it as 2X the felt recoil of a 4566 using the same ammo. I can relate to the arthritis and I don't think any 4516s recoil will trouble you there. But what little I know of carpal tunnel would cause me to advise you NOT to buy a 4516 no dash. I think you WOULD be effected by its recoil pulse.

As far as the price, I wish I could find a $400 4516 locally. I would buy it! Around here, 4516s - when they can be found - bring $550 to $600. $500 or less being considered a deal. $400 would be a very good deal.

Good luck with your 4516 purchase, should you decide to make it. They are great compact 45s. Mostly over looked and overshadowed by the current rage for striker fired plastic. And every ome I have ever owned or shot, shot like a laser. Accurate out of all proportion to its size. Hope this helps! Regards 18DAI

To me, the first consideration in choosing a compact 45 is minimizing weight in a platform that otherwise has acceptable recoil and magazine capacity. For those reasons, I think the 4513TSW pre-rail is a better choice than any of the 4516 models. I say this, though, not having owned or shot any 4516s. Perhaps 18DAI will throw in on the relative recoil of these guns. Both are fine, durable, and reliable pistols. I just give the 4513TSW the edge for weight reasons.

I am biased when it comes to a pre rail 4513TSW vigil617. It is my favorite handgun. And my most carried gun.

But I don't think carrying is the OPs primary concern here. If I understand it correctly, recoil pulse is his concern. And lighter weight, smaller size is not going to benefit him. Especially with the carpal tunnel surgery. Those I know who have had that surgery had a long road to recovery and a meriad of issues and things to avoid. Especially things like hard recoiling big bore guns.

And while the 4513TSW is a fairly comfortable compact 45 to shoot......much softer in recoil than those shield 45s I have shot......and easily 2X less felt recoil than a G36, to me, I would not suggest it to the OP. Because it DOES have more felt recoil than a 4516-1 or 4516-2. Again, TO ME.

In fact, in this particular case, I think the OP would be better served with a soft recoiling 9mm vice a 45. But that is not the question he asked. Regards 18DAI
